I finished ‘The Man Who Was Thursday’ with my book club last week and really liked this section: “Then, and again and always,” went on Syme like a man talking to himself, “that has been for me the mystery of Sunday, and it is also the mystery of the world. When I see the horrible back, I am sure the noble face is but a mask. When I see the face but for an instant, I know the back is only a jest. My author portrait. My mother shot this.

I have spent most of my life being looked at by her before being looked at by anyone else. Before modelling and television and photographs that belonged to other people. Before I understood what an author portrait was supposed to say about its subject, there was my mother, and her camera, always pointed at me.

Now there is a finished novel on my desk, and we did it for real. No costumes. I am an author. She stands behind the camera, and I try to look like the sort of woman who could have written 130,000 words.

Anne Carson was reached by the Nobel prize committee (with great trouble) via landline in her home in Reykjavík, Iceland. She was sweeping the kitchen floor and “listening to the wind” when they told her she’d won the award. She also said, “Yikes”. taken in Belize by @theseaitself

Re-reading Palahniuk is always fun.
