Presented as part of Fremantle Biennale’s ‘Room Service’ at the heritage-listed P&O Hotel, our studio led a group of invited collaborators in creating an intimate space for contemplation and quiet.

Through naturally dyed textiles, hyperlocal timber and stone, and an evocative commissioned scentscape, the installation explored materiality, constructed memory, and locality, inviting visitors to pause, consider the site’s precolonial histories, and encounter place through its deeper social, psychological, and sensory layers.

Petitgrain is remarkable and one of my favourites.

The essential oil is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree - the same tree that gives us Orange from the fruit and Neroli from the blossoms. It’s a floral, wood and citrus, all at once.

Blends beautifully with Frankincense, Cedarwood Atlas, Lavender, Lemon, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Clary Sage, Juniperberry, Geranium, and Vetiver. Or just diffuse it on its own.

The @the.facades.exhibition aromatic blend was built on deep, grounding base notes, a strong middle, and one complex, uplifting lighter note.

My intention was to mirror the qualities of the talent in the room while creating the conditions for everyone else to slow down, stay present and notice what sits underneath the surface.

There are six elements in total, and as with all aromatic blends the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Here they are.

Behind every image is a story. Behind every façade, a deeper truth.

Curated by @iamdanagostino, @the.facades.exhibition brings together 50 Western Australian photographers and image makers in a collective exhibition of self-portraiture, revealing the often unseen experiences that sit beneath the surface of creative life. Through honest and deeply personal works, each contributor offers a glimpse into their inner world.

Together, these works form a powerful snapshot of mental health within the creative community, inviting us to pause, look closer and start a conversation.

The Second Salon made a bespoke aromatic blend for opening night on Thursday at @fridaysstudio. My intention was to mirror the qualities of the talent in the room while creating the conditions for everyone else to slow down, stay present and notice what sits underneath the surface.

Aroma is invisible and intangible - unseen, but never not felt.

The six elements will be explained in a post to follow.

FRANKINCENSE essential oil is so special. It comes from a small tree with lots of leaves and white/pale pink flowers. When the bark is cut a natural resin is released, which solidifies into Frankincense resin. The essential oil is steam distilled from the resin.

Long regarded as one of the world’s most precious aromatics, it was once reserved for temples, medicine chests and royal households. Frankincense has a special luxury to it, and not just because of its high price. Maybe it’s the way it comes to us — the resin forming slowly under the bark, pushed out in small tears and left to harden in the heat before it’s gathered and distilled.

Frankincense essential oil is earthy, woody and spicy-sweet. A fresh top-note followed by a warm and rich undertone. You often notice the soothing and meditative quality before you realise why.

Blends well with Roman Chamomile, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Lime, Sandalwood, Pine, Vetiver, Lavender, Orange, Bergamot, Basil, and Cedarwood Atlas.

Hint: Try blending Frankincense with a citrus and see what happens.

HOW TO GET YOUR HOME TO SMELL LIKE THE BUSH ON A RAINY DAY 🌿🌧️

You know you’re alive when you’re in the bush and it’s raining. It takes over your senses completely, and reminds you that you’re a tiny human in a massive world.

The bush on a rainy day smells the way it does because rain disturbs the volatile oils held just under the leaf surface, releasing them into the air. They lift, mix with cool air and damp earth, and that’s the aroma that feels so comforting.

This blend will get you very close. It’s also, coincidentally, the blend for Green Shoots, which you’ll find in the online shop.

Lemon is bright, clean and sharp — crisper and more defined than other citrus oils. Lemon feels clarifying, energising and optimistic. In a blend, it lifts and brightens everything around it.

Peppermint brings a fresh, herbaceous, mentholic quality that feels cooling, stimulating and invigorating.

Eucalyptus is strong and fresh, camphoraceous, and very familiar. It feels clearing and cleansing - this is where most of the “bush on a rainy day” comes from.

Cedarwood Atlas opens with a gentle camphoraceous top note that settles into a sweet, woody‑balsamic undertone. It carries the same strengthening, stabilising presence as the majestic Cedarwood tree.
