SILA is a project I initiated in 2024—an ongoing exploration of connection, heritage, and transformation.
It bridges the timeless tradition of Palestinian embroidery, tatreez, with the dynamic worlds of contemporary art, design, and fashion. Rooted in the rich cultural tapestry of Palestine, SILA invites artists and designers across disciplines (textile, painting, sculpture, and fashion) to engage with tatreez as a powerful visual language.

Through these works, traditional motifs are not static relics, but reimagined as living forms, carrying stories of identity and rootedness into the present.

For a majority of works, SILA is a collaboration with the master embroiderers of Inaash Association, whose decades of craftsmanship ground the project in authenticity and continuity.

SIlA CONNECTS art & craft, past & present, embroiderers & designers, artists from various nations speaking the language of the land and its people. by @thesilaproject

SILA (means connection in Arabic) evokes multiple links related to Palestinian culture. Here , the craft , an embroidered jacket by @inaashassociation is designed by the amazing artist @samiahalaby .
SILA ‘s concept resonates with the this quote from Edward Said’s book, After the Last Sky: Palestinian Lives, which examines Palestinian identity, memory, and exile: “photographs, dresses, objects, severed from their original locale, the rituals of speech and custom, much reproduced, enlarged, thematized, embroidered and passed around, they are strands in the web of affiliations we Palestinians use to tie ourselves to our identity and to each other.” by @thesilaproject

The SILA Project begins by inviting artists who are genuinely eager to learn the language of Tatreez and reinterpret it through their own artistic practice.
It is a journey into Palestinian culture, revealing the richness of Tatreez’s symbols through contemporary art, design, and fashion. Each collaboration carries tradition forward while opening new paths for creative expression. #textileart#embroideryart#tatreez#multimediaart by @thesilaproject

@alqala_hilosdehistoria includes a special contribution of @fadiaahmadofficial , whose cinematic installation Between Two Shades of Blue examines exile, memory and the search for belonging through Mediterranean lens.
« The sea functions as a central metaphor an
visual element — not as a boundary, but as a
space of connection linking different shores,
stories and identities.
Through moving image and sound, Fadia Ahmad explores how memory, language and cultural inheritance travel across generations, suggesting that belonging is not confined to territory but formed through shared human experience.» by @thesilaproject

“It is not a garment I cast off this day, but a skin that I tear with my own hands. Nor is it a thought I leave behind me, but a heart made sweet with hunger and thirst.” - Khalil Gibran, The Prophet (1923). by @thesilaproject

Presented @alqala_hilosdehistoria two masterpieces by @farah.behbehani , embroidered by @inaashassociation , representing Al-Khalil & Beyt Lahrm. These masterpieces are part of The Remembrance series. “It is a textile series that weaves together Palestinian embroidery and the native flora of Palestine to honor the fragile continuities of land, lineage, and healing. The work examines the systemic uprooting and destruction of Palestinian flora, which forms part of a broader project of erasure and domination, severing native people from land, livelihood, and inherited ecological memory.” by @thesilaproject

Presented @alqala_hilosdehistoria by Sila Project/A Herirage In Motion, LiKE is a work by @joanna.barakat.art , embroidered by @inaashassociation . « LIKE reflects on how social media shapes our witnessing of violence in Gaza, questioning the act of ‘liking’ images of suffering within algorithm-driven platforms. The work combines traditional Palestinian Graves motifs with repeated heart symbols inspired by social media reactions. Through this fusion, the piece considers the experience of scrolling through distressing images and the uneasy necessity of engaging with them in order to keep stories visible. » This work was exhibited at Maraya Art Center for”Sila,All that is Left To You “ exhibition. #textileart #embroideryartist #tatreez#madridexhibition by @thesilaproject

Presented at @alqala_hilosdehistoria by Nour Hage for Sila project : “Study of a Cypress Tree”
“Study of a Cypress Tree is an ode to one of the most enduring recurring motifs in Palestinian embroidery, a symbol of hope and resilience. Even as the cypress tree undergoes seven stages of abstraction in this artwork, revealing details along the way, its core meaning remains intact: an enduring silhouette steadfast against the passage of time.” NH

Presented at @alqala_hilosdehistoria as part of the SILA Project, « A Dialogue » embroidered panel was designed and created by Souad Amine and her team of master embroiderers. It introduces a new vocabulary of motifs that emerged during the geno cide, bearing witness to horrific experience through the language of tatreez.
Far from being static, tatreez is a dynamic and evolving visual language. It carries the stories of Palestinian women—of life on the land in times of peace, and of the violence, loss, and devastation that mark times of catastrophe. #embroideryart#textileart #madridart #madridexposiciones by @thesilaproject
