✨on a hiatus to prioritize concussion recovery 🧠
this is my first concussion and it has been the most physically challenging experience for me. coming to realize how much i have taken my brain for granted when i am unable to do what i thought was simple is no longer simple like walking a 5-min walk has taken about 40-mins on certain days. there are days like today i can walk my “usual” pace without needing to lay down in an hour with an eye mask on. Yet this time has allowed me to courageously reach out to people for help, ask for accommodations, and sometimes exchange dark humor and other times being corny.

There are two shows that I very much looked forward to performing in and had to miss this month. Deep heartfull gratitude and love to @mochamocha2.0 and @vixenviolencia for y’all care and encouragement to step back from performing and prioritize my health, to rest and recover 🥹🫶

As I am typing this, I would like to share more AND I am practicing honoring my brain’s capacity to get off screens (well in some way this helped me kicked my addiction to scrolling 😂)

So, I will be off here through end of Sept.

🦋 just remembered it is my 2nd Burly Anniversary since my burlesque debut on June 25, 2024. This act is called ✨Queer Butterfly 🦋

Inspiration & story for this act
🌈 Since I was a teen, it became clear that I wasn’t straight. when i was a freshmen in high school, I remember the feeling that words couldn’t describe at the time when I saw her tables away in a public library. i remember feeling of butterflies inside and super shy yet couldn’t stop looking at her. Little did i know she was also looking at me instead of right past me.

She did what i didn’t have the courage at the time, she came up to me and started talking to me. I remember she opened with “i like your eyebrows” and i replied back “you are so pretty.”

✨This is why for this act, I choose the song “girl ur so pretty” by @ambarlucid when i first listened to ambar’s song, this pleasant memory came up

This was the first time crushing on a girl yet as 15yo grew up in a heteronormative conditions that when i had a new experience that words could describe, there wasn’t anyone i could talk to about this at the time. i wanted to get to know and be friends with this person i just met. our friendship began that day even though we lived cities away. she would drive to me and at times take the bus to her. we acknowledged the feelings yet i didn’t know what to do with the feelings because all i knew at that time was someone who looked like a girl only dates boys. so we stayed friends and i didn’t pursue more than that.

It wasn’t until I moved to Chicago in 2020. (will share in a separate post sometime in the future my relationship with words as an ESL speaker)

It was in 2024, I arrived at a place in my life of embracing my queer identity AND ready to come out publicly.

Timing worked out where it felt aligned to come out publicly through this burlesque debut @thenewporttheater

What an incredibly powerful magical experience it has been to come out and be witnessed & embraced in the Chicago Burlesque community & non-burlesque communities 🥹

Emerging from a month long hiatus of mourning. Slowly the aliveness is coming back. Laughing is possible. Deeply grateful for community, people who checked in on me, extending compassion and care, gentleness, support in various ways 🥹 💖✨

Finally having a moment to post this from 3/21 🔥
I have been sitting with what to share in the month of AANPI Heritage Month & Mental Health Awareness Month. One I really wanted to share recently discovering I came over to the U.S. as a refugee reaching out to relatives to learn about the family history and what their experiences during and after the Vietnam War. Learning it is something many Vietnamese parents do not share about the painful parts of their past until their children are adults. I understand more today of why. Anywho will share this for another day.

This morning I decided to share about developing this burlesque act called resisting & embracing that’s dear to my spirit and maternal lineage for @kazmouniverse show on 2/22.

i was invited to perform this act again by @huesofdenim for mutual magic show, a mutual aid fundraiser by and for queer asians. so i got to refine this act and adapted to a different space @hai_bayo

😅 fun fact: i got my FIRST hemorrhoid ever day of mutual magic 3/21 😖 literally needed to adapt from burlesque thong to my cotton boyshort because the hemorrhoid was like nothing is going here today!

Act was refined again and this unexpected hemorrhoid helped me take it to the next level AND feel even more connected with this act where it flowed through and with the audience ✨

To resist having to force myself to be uncomfortable in pain wearing a thong to allowing myself as much comfort and ease.

This helped me reflect a part of my lived experience and going back at least 3 generations in my maternal lineage that i am able to gather information of how much discomfort and pain we had to bear daily because we didn’t matter and were expected not to name them.

🪷 This act continues to be a medium not just healing for myself: also for intergenerational ancestral healing.

🔥 I get to embrace who i am fully, express and be bold with a hint of mischievous AND give the 🖕🖕to patriarchy under the guise of filial piety for those who couldn’t in lineage.

I can feel their presence supporting and embracing the courage to embrace myself fully and express fully and be embraced and celebrated by people today 🥹🙏💗

playfulness is something that is sOooo lifegiving especially as an ADHDer and one way & space I learned I can access play is burlesque—specifically @willylaqueue burlesque improv class in 2024 @thenewporttheater

honestly this has been a major part of the creativity and play that flows through Sinful Delight and beyond burlesque in personal life and work as a therapist 💫 BIG big thank YOU to @willylaqueue for the loving challenges in community 🥹
