We are delighted to share that the new Skellig Coast website is now live!

A huge amount of work by the Skellig Coast Tourism Network has gone into getting it up and running, and we are really pleased to finally share it with everyone.

The new website is a great way to discover the Skellig Coast, our towns and villages, things to do and see, places to stay, and the many local businesses along the way. It’s also a useful resource for locals to see what’s happening across the Skellig Coast and discover more of what’s on our doorstep.

My Kerry is showcasing the very best of this beautiful, healing place.

Today we meet Paul whose passion for the healing rythm of nature, curiosity and appreciation for the sights and sounds of the natural world along the hills and coastlines of Valentia Island led him to meeting Ukrainian Bee Keeper Anton to set up the Valentia Bee Beds experience. Allowing people to reconnect with the healing power of nature, take time for themselves and revive their spirits is key to how this part of Kerry has enabled Paul and Anton to thrive, and be continuously regenerated with creativity and purpose.

🚀 We did it: The Millennium Falcon is finished!

18 hours, 7,541 pieces and over €2,000 raised so far!

It was a long one, including a 2am finish last night, but we were back at it today and got it finished!

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, shared, called in, sent us messages and helped with the build. We had donations from all over Ireland and as far away as Ukraine and Australia, all supporting youth programming here in South Kerry. 💛

There is still time to donate! ❤️ We may have finished the build, but the Millennium Falcon story isn’t over yet.

And a pretty good way to kick off @worldspaceweek in the @portmageedomes ! 🚀

One small island. So many stories. 🌊

On Valentia Island, you can follow the footsteps of animals that walked across the land around 385 million years ago, stand where a cable once connected Europe with North America, and visit a lighthouse that has watched over the Atlantic since 1841.

In 1866, Valentia became the European endpoint of the first successful permanent transatlantic telegraph cable, linking the island with Heart’s Content in Newfoundland. Messages that once took weeks to cross the Atlantic could now travel in minutes.

And long before any of that, the island was already telling its story in stone — its famous tetrapod trackways offering a remarkable glimpse into the early movement of vertebrate life onto land.

Three very different chapters. One remarkable island.

MONDAY MEMORY: WHEN THE RAILWAY CAME TO CAHERSIVEEN

In September 1893, the railway officially arrived in Cahersiveen.

The new line connected Farranfore with Valentia Harbour, passing through some of the most spectacular scenery on the Iveragh Peninsula. Cahersiveen became one of the principal stations on the route, complete with its own locomotive facilities.

The railway served the area for almost 67 years, with the last train running in January 1960 before the line officially closed on 1 February.

But the story hasn't completely disappeared.

🚂 You'll find a little piece of Cahersiveen's railway heritage in the design of the Beer Garden at Frank's Bar & Bistro.

So next time you're enjoying a drink at Frank's, take a look around — you might spot a few reminders of the railway that once ran through Cahersiveen.

History, heritage… and a pint of Guinness.

Aoibheann (director id SC Archaeology Festival) which is presented by Heritage I wrath with support from Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Waterville IRD, Streamscapes, Tech Amergin, Rock Art Kerry, Kerry Dark Sky Tourism, Caherdaniel Dark Sky Group and a volunteer-led committee - the festival is not-for-profit and celebrates our extraordinary archaeological heritage here on the I wrath Peninsula in South Kerry.
