Pont Neuf, Toulouse, sketched in ink and watercolour during the 2026 Urban Sketchers Symposium.This was my final sketch of the symposium, and one I felt much happier with. I kept the colours clean, resisted overworking the washes, and began applying some of the principles I learned in the workshop with @owen.labbe, particularly in the drawing and my choices of shadow colour.The symposium may be over, but I still have plenty more Toulouse sketches and moments to share. Pen and watercolour sketch of Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Toulouse.I managed a quick pen sketch while I was in Toulouse, but I really wanted to paint it, so this one is from one of my photos.I have definitely taken on the suggestion from Owen’s workshop (@owen.labbe) of starting with a pencil box to place the sketch, then adding just the main block outlines.The photos show my pencil sketch, then the ink stage, first wash, and finally the shadows and final details.Materials: Kremer watercolours, Lamy Safari fountain pen, Rohrer and Klingner Thea ink, Escoda Último brush and Pleinly sketchbook.#penandwatercolour #penandwatercolor #watercoloursketch #toulouse #thesketchingdoc by @thesketchingdoc

Sketch of Toulouse, France in ink and watercolour.There were so many fabulous buildings in Toulouse and nowhere near enough time to sketch them all, during the symposium so I’m sketching from my photos now I’m home. I don’t usually paint skies, but as this sketch developed, I felt the scene needed it. 15-minute pen sketch of Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, Toulouse.The lovely Natalia Li @natalia_li_art lent me her pen with a special nib to try, so I gave it a very quick test while sketching in Toulouse.Unfortunately, the ink wasn’t waterproof, so I couldn’t add watercolour—but perhaps this little sketch was meant to stay monochrome!The only paper I had with me was a sample of Hahnemühle hot-pressed watercolour paper from the symposium Art Market, which made a rather luxurious surface for a 15-minute pen sketch! #urbansketching #toulousesketch #penandinkdrawing #architecturesketch #fountainpensketch by @thesketchingdoc

Pen and watercolour sketch of the Porte Narbonnaise, Carcassonne, France. 🇫🇷The Porte Narbonnaise is the iconic entrance to the medieval city of Carcassonne, and I couldn’t resist sketching its magnificent twin towers. I love how their warm terracotta roofs stand out against the pale stone walls. Most of the other towers within the cité have slate-grey roofs, making this gateway an especially striking welcome to one of France’s best-preserved medieval cities.Swipe to follow the journey from pen lines to the finished painting.This is my final sketch from beautiful Carcassonne. Pen and watercolour sketch looking towards the medieval city of Carcassonne, France.I sketched this on location during my walk up to the medieval city, then painted it later back at my accommodation. This time I wanted to try a slightly different approach. Rather than painting a separate shadows layer followed by a colour layer, I built the painting up gradually as I went. Pen and watercolour sketch of a Toulouse street scene, drawn on location during the Urban Sketchers Symposium 2026.This wasn’t a subject I would have chosen myself! Ian Fennelly loves wonderfully chaotic street corners, while I’m usually drawn to hero buildings. It definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone—but that’s one of the reasons I love sketching with other artists.One of my favourite parts of the day was swapping stickers with sketchers from all over the world. Every sticker has a story and reminds me of a conversation, a shared sketch, or a new friendship. I have a feeling this little collection will become one of my favourite souvenirs from Toulouse.Sometimes the best part of a sketch isn’t the finished drawing—it’s the people you meet along the way. ❤️ by @thesketchingdoc

A circular sketch of London — this one took longer than I expected.Drawn on A4, it took around 2¾ hours, most of that spent on the initial ink stage.You’ll notice I stopped before finishing all the line work. I started to get lost in the detail and wasn’t sure where to push further and where to leave it. Moving into colour helped simplify the decisions, and I came back in afterwards to resolve a few areas.I also had to stop myself adding more London icons (the temptation to squeeze in a bus was strong), but I wanted to keep the composition clear.A fun one to do — and I’ll definitely try more cities in this format.⸻Hashtags#thesketchingdoc #pleinly #architecturesketch #watercolourart #inkdrawing by @thesketchingdoc

Just a little sketching memory from our time in Bari Old Town (Bari Vecchia), Puglia, Italy 🇮🇹.This pen and watercolour urban sketch is of the lovely peach-coloured building that became our home for a few days—we stayed in the ground-floor apartment. Every morning we stepped outside into these quiet little lanes, and before long I knew I had to sketch it.Swipe through to see the sketch in reverse—from the finished painting, back through the different stages, all the way to the original reference photo.For me, keeping a travel sketchbook is one of the best ways to remember a place. Sometimes the best sketching days don’t go to plan. 🇫🇷🎨With the Bastille Day crowds gathering for the fireworks, I decided to wander further along the Garonne to find my own quiet viewpoint towards the iconic dome of La Grave.I started the sketch on my own and, completely by chance, found myself sketching a few metres away from another sketcher who introduced herself as Jane.
