My song Love Is An Eternal Lie was originally released on my debut album Leaves and Roots in 2008. I think I already knew back then (probably even while writing it) that I didn’t really believe in its opening line, which eventually became the title itself. The teenage anger I felt over the end of a relationship I deeply cared about led me to express my feelings that way. The rest of the song, of course, speaks about what I now know to be true: heartbreak heals, ex-lovers reconcile, life goes on. But in that deep low, all I wanted was to lash out at love itself, like a teenager saying “I hate you” to a beloved parent or sibling.I still think it’s a good song, but I’ve rarely performed it in the past few years.When Laura Samani told me she wanted to include it in her second feature, I couldn’t have been happier. Her work is extraordinary and truly speaks to the soul. Laura’s debut Piccolo Corpo is a masterpiece. So I knew her choice of Love Is An Eternal Lie was the right one. I only asked to re-record it, to give the song a new shape, and she suggested using a live version she liked as a reference.I’m very pleased with the result: I had the chance to smooth out some imperfections, adapt the key to my adult voice, and slow down the pace. Love Is An Eternal Lie is still a teenage song, but now it feels more mature—ripe, even.It comes out at midnight, the link is in my bio. I’d be happy if you gave it a listen, and even happier if you go see the film.
