As ICE raids and fires raged throughout the Southland, a small family in Bell Gardens was looking forward to celebrating their daughter’s 8th grade culmination.

But a few days before graduation, their father, Miguel Lorenzana Márquez, also known as Mike, received a call from his immigration attorney informing him he had an appointment with USCIS at 9 a.m. that same day.

Shortly after he checked in, Márquez was detained by ICE agents. His family had no idea that by dinner time, they would be separated by steel doors and unanswered questions.

⚠️ Content Warning: The Southlander previously reported that GEO Group, a billion-dollar private prison company, was ordered by the judge to share unsealed footage of the June 12, 2020 incident at the Adelanto ICE processing center, when a SWAT-like team began using chemical weapons that injured detainees who were protesting by refusing to return to their cells.

Newly unsealed videos in the case show the moments shortly before, during, and after the use of force unfolded. Because private prison operators are not beholden to the same public records requirements as the government, these videos offer a rare look inside a facility that continues to face allegations of inhumane conditions (https://www.sbsun.com/2026/07/16/judge-orders-major-changes-at-ices-adelanto-detention-center-after-attorneys-allege-inhumane-conditions-there/) at its facilities.

Billion-dollar private prison operator GEO Group was ordered by a judge to provide us with records related to a brutal use-of-force incident that occurred at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center on June 12, 2020.

These records were initially submitted under seal in an ongoing civil lawsuit against GEO Group filed in federal court by Hugo Gonzalez, Jose Baca, Erick Lopez, Mario Manjarrez, and Ricardo Sandoval Guadarrama, who say they were injured by the attack carried out by the company’s SWAT-like team of guards.

The Southlander will publish multiple investigative pieces using these records, but we need your help to sustain our newsroom operations. Become a paid subscriber today using the link in our bio.

Public Justice intervened in a case against multi-million-dollar ICE contractor GEO Group — and we won. Now they have to unseal documents and video evidence of abuse inside their notorious Adelanto ICE Processing Center.

GEO Group has until July 10 to refile unsealed versions of the records we were seeking, including video footage of a use of force incident.

The public has a right to know the truth about conditions in Adelanto, and we’ll ensure the public has access to this information as soon as the records are unsealed. #unriggingthesystem by @thesouthlander

We just got an email from the lawyers at Public Justice that our motion was granted to unseal footage, emails, reports, and logs related to a 2021 use of force incident at Adelanto, one of ICE’s main detention centers in Southern California. GEO Group, the private security company that operates the facility, has until July 10 to turn over the records.

Our mission to provide more transparency to the public and hold powerful actors accountable will not be impeded, even if we have to go to court to obtain the necessary records.

I was the photographer and a co-editor on @thesouthlander’s recent story about MOCA union employees fighting for a living wage, here are my photos shot for @thesouthlander.

1) Portrait of Kriten Huizar (@la_kristen_virgen), MOCA employee who had to take on a second job to make ends meet.

2) A corner of the museum, one side in harsh shadow which I felt captured the ongoing struggle between the workers and mgmt.

3) Main entrance of MOCA on a not-so-busy afternoon.

4) The lead image of the story, MOCA’s sign, shadow encroaching.

Unionized workers at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), who are among the lowest-paid museum workers in the city, escalated their push to negotiate a new contract and wage increases by staging public protests.

Represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (@afscme36 ) District Council 36, the union argues that the people who maintain one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and cultural institutions can no longer afford to live in the city where they work.
