Hey there, I’m Kelli 🤍
I’ve spent 25 years specializing in Childhood Apraxia of Speech, and I know how overwhelming CAS treatment planning can be.
That’s why I created The Speech Path Mentor—a simple, supportive space for SLPs to learn, plan, and tailor therapy with confidence.

Owner of Speech4Kids of Gainesville • CAS Lecturer • Clinician Specializing in Treatment of CAS

Let’s make CAS feel clearer, together ✨ by @thespeechpathmentor

CAS is a motor planning disorder.

This means that a child knows what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty planning and coordinating the movements required for speech.

Kids with CAS often show:
 • Inconsistent productions
 • Difficulty imitating sounds or words
 • Limited babbling early on
 • Challenges sequencing sounds and syllables

That’s why, when therapy focuses solely on getting more repetitions without addressing the motor planning component, children may practice but not actually learn.

Effective CAS therapy requires:
 ✨ Intentional target selection
 ✨ Appropriate cueing and support
 ✨ Structured practice conditions

Addressing motor planning, not just speech output, improves your patient’s results.

If you want to learn how to better understand and treat CAS, check out my course on CAS thru the link in my bio.

As a new SLP, I would leave conferences feeling so energized, but when I returned from them

I couldn’t translate anything I learned into my therapy sessions.

Because I had the concepts, but not the application.

And that gap is what so many SLPs experience. You learn what to do, but not always how to apply it in real sessions.

That’s why I created Speech Path Mentor.

It’s focused on turning concepts into clear, actionable steps you can actually use in your Childhood Apraxia sessions.

If you’ve ever felt that same gap, you’re not alone.

Each tool I use in my Childhood Apraxia sessions has a specific purpose.

1️⃣ A simple game or toy to get high reps of target syllables without it feeling like drills

2️⃣ An open-ended toy to create shared play and natural opportunities for practice

3️⃣ Visual cue cards to support motor planning and guide the child’s attempts

Because with Childhood Apraxia sessions, it’s important to have tools that support the child in all different ways.

I teach more actionable tips like this you can implement in your sessions in my course, Childhood Apraxia Unlocked.

Look at the full course itinerary through the link in my bio.

I see this all the time with SLPs.

You understand the concepts behind Childhood Apraxia.

But applying it in the moment is a completely different skill.

That gap is what makes sessions feel harder than they should.

That’s the piece I spend time on inside my Childhood Apraxia course — helping you take what you already know and apply it in your sessions.

You could see he had so much to say, but he couldn’t get it out.

And then, little by little, that started to change.

Until one day, he was off to kindergarten and caught up to his peers.

These are the moments that stay with you.

If your therapy goals aren’t clear, it’s hard to run an effective session.

Clear, specific goals make it easier to:
✅ Know what to target
✅ Structure your sessions
✅ Actually track progress

I teach how to determine what goals to set in your sessions, and more applicable lessons like this, inside my Childhood Apraxia course.

Narrating your sessions isn’t wrong, it’s just not the priority for a child with Childhood Apraxia.

Many kids with CAS do have expressive language delays, but the primary challenge is motor planning for speech.

So when we fill every moment with language, we can actually make it harder for them to try.

Instead, focus on making it easier to initiate speech.

This is the kind of shift that changes how your patients progress.

I go deeper into how to make these adjustments inside my Childhood Apraxia course.

Vowel errors can be a really important clue, not just for identifying Childhood Apraxia.

But for how you should approach treatment and plan your sessions.

Because once you recognize the signs and test for it, your treatment approach should shift.

I go deeper into how you can structure effective Childhood Apraxia sessions in my Childhood Apraxia course.
