A day of immersive computational art and AV performance unfolding across the world’s last surviving Victorian steamship!

The works respond to the steamship’s machinery, its architecture, navigation and communication systems and the river around it, exploring the forces that connect machines and environment.

River Recital @ Totally Thames festival 2026

We head down to the SS Robin @ Trinity Buoy Wharf to check how preparations are going for the River Recital series.

This September, River Recital presents three distinctive events for Totally Thames, bringing together more than 30 artists across two of London’s remarkable floating cultural spaces. Supported by Thames Festival Trust, Tower Bridge Yacht & Boat Company and Trinity Buoy Wharf Trust, the programme celebrates the creativity, communities and industrial heritage of the River Thames.

Tours of the SS Robin may be fully booked, however we always have a few no shows or some extra last minute availability 🚢
If you were too late to book but are interested in a joining a tour of the SS Robin, we highly recommend visiting us on one of our open house dates (there are plenty of other things to do whilst you’re here) and letting a member of staff know that you are interested in joining a Tour - they’ll be able to help fit you in if we have any available spaces!

The new tiles experiment worked. No cracking, just joy! Here are a few of the tiles i painted; the Ss Robin, a reed warbler from Bow Creek ecology park, and a bat.

This morning I got that slightly insane moment when i knew the kiln is ready to be opened, so I went down into the studio at 5am to see what is inside. I am so glad I did. I need to paint some colours double layer, but pretty happy with these results.

Throwback to glass stamping and blowing with @workinglass during the first heatwave of the year 🌞
We had two stamps made especially for the occasion depicting the stern and bow of the ship. Participants could choose if they wanted to do green (for starboard) or red (for port) in their design. There were also slots available over the weekend for people to try out glass blowing to create their own glass buoys. This event was part of the SE.E.NE.W histories project culmination exhibition by @fitzrovianoir_

This time last month we were making the final preparations to send our Diana out for the annual Thames barge race 🚣🏻 it's an old tradition honouring the barge drivers who would steer these hulks of metal loaded up with cargo up and down the Thames with no engines, just oars and the tide behind them 🌊 Diana was built around 1890, making her as old as the SS Robin. She's 57ft long, made originally from riveted iron (with some steel repairs) and is one of the oldest surviving Thames lighter barges remaining.

We've been working for months to remove as much of the rust and damaged paint from her hull and deck as possible. It was so satisfying to step back once the final sign work was complete and see how much of a glow up she's had ✨ Now that she's back at the wharf, we will continue restoration on the other side of the hull.

Thomas Stone is a London-based composer whose practice centres on live performance using bass instruments. Drawing inspiration from tinnitus, ritual, the physical effects of sound, and 20th-century composition, he creates immersive works that blur the boundaries between acoustic and electronic sound.

His post-classical/post-techno soundscapes use long tones, dissonance, and cyclic rhythms to transform seemingly austere materials into moments of fragile beauty.

His music has been released on Cloudchamber Recordings, Bloxham Tapes, and Sensory Leakage, and he has been named “an artist to watch” by Nick Luscombe on BBC Radio 3. Thomas has also performed at institutions including Tate Britain, The Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Kings Place, and Britten Pears Arts.

This is a volunteer appreciation post! Thank you, Keith, who spent many days this May helping us out. From repairing and reviving Diana's oars (ready for July's annual barge race) and doing surface prep before we paint, it's been a joy. He also brought in excellent home made cookies and too good to waste sandwiches to share.
