The Stitchery is beyond excited for TOILE CLUB LAUNCH EVENT - SELVEDGE! Happening at Echo and Bounce, Woolloongabba, 4-10pm Sat 10 Aug. FYI - this is the fashion event Magandjin needs & deserves! @toile_club @echoandbounce_

This is a celebration of local creative talent pushing boundaries in fashion and music. Think of “selvedge” (the edge of fabric that won’t fray) as the edge of something extraordinary, just like the talent we’ve got lined up.

✨Throwback to our very first Bowery party in October 2016 ✨

Held at the East Brisbane Bowls Club, this first iteration was called ‘Bowery Bowl’ and was dreamt up by former Stitchery member, Sal Edwards @sollydwards

Sal had a vision for a ‘fashion party’ centred around the life and work of queer icon, Leigh Bowery. We all loved the idea of creating something fun and celebratory for our fashion community to connect at, and this seemed like a great reason to throw an extreme costume dress up party. With minimal budget and a lot of glitter curtains, we went to work with Sullivan @sullivain (back when they lived in Meanjin) creating a one-of-a-kind, fun queer fashion dance party just for our community in Bris.

In these pics by Savannah Van Der Niet @savvyv we see the epic costumes of partygoers, the Bowery Bowl dance floor, the first ever Bowery Costume Competition ‘runway’ (a clump of glitter curtains) and its winners, and the beautiful judging panel.

Bowery has evolved a lot since then, but the core of the event has remained the same: a celebration of freedom, expression, transgression and connection through radical fashion - an ethos taught to us by the life and work of Leigh Bowery.

PS: thank you for all your support over the weekend, we love our community. We have more to say on recent announcements, but this will come in time. Appreciate you all🫶💕

It’s been just over 2 months since ‘Bowerytopia: TABOO’, our sixth Bowery party since 2016, and we think we’ve finally recovered 😂

Do you like BOGS? Do you like SWAMP STUFF and also DAMP? Well get ready for the swampiest boggiest bog-bog you’ve ever had a fashion shoot in! Created by Stitchery foremothers, artist Paula Dunlop @paula_dunlop and designer Carla Binotto @classicbinotto the Bog Bog Photo Booth is the best Bog you will see this year probably. Best embodiment of Leigh Bowery’s practice. Shock, delight, obscure and mess with dress and the body.

✂️THE DIY QUEEN
Best crafty look made from low cost or ephemeral supplies.

👠THE FASHION QUEEN
Best planned and executed high fashion look.

🎟️HOW TO ENTER🎟️
- Be ready at the stage door 11.15PM
- Members of The Stitchery will be handing out small tickets with this info on the night. You can also pick one up at the Coat Check.
- Wait side stage until the judges are announced, then you’ll be directed on stage
- Walk the runway and show us your Bowery inspired look!
- Hang on stage while the judges deliberate

PLEASE NOTE: accessing the stage involves climbing and descending some sets of stairs.

We can’t wait to see what magic you’ve come up with!

✨Not sure if Bowerytopia: TABOO is the event for you? Let us tell you what to expect & access info about this event!✨

1: TABOO is a costume, music and performance event. There will be DJ’s, dance/ music/ burlesque performances on stage and music playing all night. Some performances will be adult themed and contain nudity. There will be a costume installation to look/ read/ enjoy. It is mostly an inside event, with low lighting throughout the venue, and some seating available. There is a wheelchair accessible area to view the stage.

2: For some folks, knowing your surroundings in advance can be helpful. To see The Tivoli’s interactive floor plans, head here: thetivoli.com.au/venue-hire
TABOO will be using all areas of the Tivoli, including some of the carpark.

3: For TABOO the Mezzanine level of the Tivoli will be open. This can be a great space to enjoy the fun at a distance and have a dance without the crowds. It’s also great for sitting down.

4. The Bog Bog Photo Booth will be on the Mezzanine level of The Tivoli. If you won’t be accessing that level and would like your fashion portrait taken, please let the Coat Check team know, and we will organise a photographer to come to you.

5: There will be free earplugs available at the Coat Check (by the main entrance) if you need them.

6: Need some fresh air? Pass outs are available at the door all night.

♦️Fashion inspired by Leigh Bowery to inspire you for Bowerytopia: TABOO!♦️

♣️Alexander McQueen Autumn/Winter 2009 - “The Horn of Plenty” collection♣️

McQueen’s “The Horn of Plenty” collection poked fun at the strict aesthetics of French couture in a bold black, white and red colour palette, giving us unhinged-but-chic fashion clown vibes. The beauty look by make-up artist Peter Philips saw models with bleached brows and now iconic extreme, oversized lips – exaggerated to the point of ridiculous and reminiscent of Leigh Bowery’s iconic giant lip. For the models who weren’t wearing Philip Treacy hats, hairstylist Guido Palau created sculptures on top of each model’s head with aluminium drink cans and plastic wrap.

Bowerytopia: TABOO takeaway: make your lips VERY BIG like a FASHION CLOWN and maybe also, strap a can to your head?

💥 Rick Owens Spring/Summer 2016 - Human Backpacks collection💥

One of Bowery’s signature performances was to strap his wife Nicola Bateman to his front and ‘wear’ her as a fashion item. Sometimes this performance would have Nicola hidden under layer of clothings, and he would ‘give birth’ to her to squeamish effect. This radical interpretation of what can be ‘worn’ as fashion is a signature trope of Bowery’s fashion practice, along with the risque aesthetic nods to practices like S&M and bondage, and the ‘taboo’ simulation of bodily functions like birth for live performances.
