I met her in Jabalpur, when I had a stopover on my way from Varanasi to Indore. Even though I had no interest in stopping there, my friend needed to, as he was working nights. The roads were all torn up because of the drainage construction, and everything was messed up and dusty.

That’s when I met a one-eyed mother dog and her pup roaming around. So, I went out at night carrying some food for them, and when I was returning to the homestay, I saw her being kicked into a drainage pit by a man simply for lying on the doormat that was outside. She was lying on our doormat, not even his. Fortunately for her, and perhaps for the man who kicked her, she narrowly escaped the iron rods inside, somehow climbed four or five feet back to the ground, and disappeared.

All of that happened so suddenly, and I made sure that he would think twice before hurting any being that wouldn’t hurt him back. He apologized, and I spared him, as she had somehow climbed back out. That night, I stayed awake until around 3, waiting for her, and I kept my monopod with me in case the guy came back too.
The next day, around evening, she came back with the same enthusiasm as the day before, but with her body, face, and legs stained.

Touch is my kind of memory. So I refused to lift her or even touch her at first. I wanted to see if anyone was feeding her. Then I started walking, and she began to follow me.

There was a temple nearby, so I went there. But there was another pack there, and when they saw her, they rushed towards her. By that time, I had picked her up.

So I decided to try the next place. I left her where I had found her, and there were some people there. They were actual goons.

I went to talk to them, and all I heard were their brave stories. “Maine ye kiya, maine woh kiya.” I joined them, and every now and then I would ask about her. Again, it was, “Maine ye bhi kiya, maine woh bhi kiya.”

I listened to them for about twenty minutes, and she too joined the party. By the end of their stories, she was grabbing my leg as if she too wanted to flee from there.

Among them, one guy got up, went somewhere, came back with biscuits, and gave them to her. By that time, I had gone out to ge by @thestrandedwolf
