Misunderstood, magnificent, intelligent beyond measure, and passionately caring. These are just four things I wish people knew more about whales. Cognitively speaking I do not believe we are even capable of fully understanding the depth of their emotions. There have been several verified instances of whales going out of their way to save other animals including humans. If only we could collectively bestow that same grace upon them.

It is well documented that some of the main reasons of human caused mortality of whales are entanglement from fishing gear and vessel strikes. Oil and gas vessels are a large portion of the world’s vessels in the water.

Let’s do better for them. Whales are a keystone species which we also rely on for a healthy & thriving ocean ecosystem. 🌊

Under current Canadian law, animals are not considered sentient beings, and are classified as property; lack of effective legal status for animals harms us all. There is a direct link between abuse to children and vulnerable persons by the hands of those who also abuse animals.
•
Sentience is the ability to experience feelings and sensations, and is an ethical basis for determining that animals deserve moral consideration;
.
Western science is finally catching up to what Indigenous knowledge keepers & elders have affirmed since time immemorial. The laws have just simply not yet caught up to our reality.
.
On April 19, 2024, the New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness was initially signed by 39 scientists, philosophers, legal scholars and those in relevant fields, from Canada and around the world. There are currently 583 signatures. The Declaration affirms there is strong scientific evidence that all vertebrates and many invertebrates possess conscious experiences, and by consciousness, the document is referring to sentience;
.
Professor Kristin Andrews, Toronto York University Research Chair in Animal Minds, who has studied animal cognition for more than 30 years, co-initiated the New York Declaration, saying “the declaration affirms that we can no longer assume these creatures are insentient or incapable of feeling... we need to recognize they likely feel pain and pleasure, and minimize the negative experiences we impose on them”;
.
The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association “holds that the recognition of animal sentience should be considered within the Canadian legal system under nationally harmonized animal welfare legislation to ensure consistent application and enforcement”; and among the 32 countries that have formally recognized non-human animal sentience include the European Union, Switzerland, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Despite many popular media headlines, numerous published research studies have shown time & time again that incorporating more plant foods and less animal-derived foods into your dietary lifestyle maximizes environmental, health, & economic benefits at the individual level.

Repost from @historiskmorskap
“What do Trump, Putin, Netanyahu, Hitler and Mussolini have in common?

They were all boys who were never truly held.
Men raised without tenderness.
Men raised in homes where love was absent, or conditional.
Where strength was mistaken for control.
Where power was the only way to survive.

Trump was taught by a father who punished weakness.
Putin lost his siblings and grew up in post-war starvation.
Netanyahu’s upbringing was rooted in militant nationalism and historical grievance.
Hitler was abused. Mussolini neglected.

None of these men were raised on maternal care. They were raised on hierarchy, fear, pride, and pain.

And now, they lead—or have led—with the same tools they were shaped by:
Punishment. Power. Projection. Paranoia.
Fueling wars in Gaza, Ukraine, Congo, and beyond.
Sending bombs to Iran.
Destroying lives for the sake of ego.

These are not leaders.
They are wounded children with armies.

What the world needs now is not more conquest.
It is maternal consciousness.
The kind of wisdom that Indigenous communities have safeguarded for generations:
To protect life.
To listen to the Earth.
To hold one another through grief instead of turning it into rage.

The future does not belong to unmothered men with missiles.
It belongs to those who carry the codes of care, connection, and responsibility.

Because world peace will never be built through domination.
It will be built through remembering what it means to be loved.
And we must look to Indigenous mothers and matriarchs for that path—before it’s too late.

In June 2025, Trump dropped bombs in Iran. Making the world even more unsafe. Hurting children, women, innocent civilians. Now is the time to speak up.

It is time to disarm fragile men with big egos and little empathy.”

While the environmental movement of the 60s-70s was rooted in holistic, ecological wisdom, it has transformed over the last several decades into something quite different, as Helena Norberg-Hodge explains.

Repost from @oceanicpreservationsociety for my American friends. 🆘👋🏼⬇️

To help us celebrate #endangeredspeciesday, we ask that you take action.

Why? Because the Endangered Species Act is under attack. A proposed rule change from the Trump administration is aiming to redefine “harm” under the ESA to mean only direct injury or death to a listed species. That may not sound significant, but the impact is HUGE.

That would mean it would no longer be illegal to damage or destroy critical habitats like old growth forests, wetlands, reefs, nesting grounds, and so much more.

Why should you care? Because habitat loss is the #1 thread to biodiversity. Most species become threatened or endangered because they lose the ecosystems they depend on. Please head to the link in our bio to SIGN THE ACTION CAMPAIGN and submit a public comment. Share this post far and wide—we have power in numbers! #ESA #endangeredspeciesact by @thesustainabilitycircle

The irony of it being #endangeredspeciesday when multiple governments are trying to snuff out protections for just that..

Repost from @cwf_fcf

🚨 The DEADLINE to speak up is May 17!

Ontario is proposing to scrap the Endangered Species Act (ESA)—a law that has protected vulnerable wildlife for nearly 20 years.

The proposed Bill 5: “Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act” would repeal the Endangered Species Act entirely. Read more at the link in bio.

If passed, this bill will:
🛑 Strip habitat protections
🛑 Eliminate recovery strategies
🛑 Allow developers to destroy habitat with zero oversight
🛑 Allow discretion about what species deserve protection

A basking log is not a habitat. A single plant is not a forest. Species at risk deserve better.

📣 What You Can Do (before May 17):
✍️ Email the Premier: premier@ontario.ca
📬 Contact your MPP: Link in bio
🌱 Comment on the Environmental Registry: Link in bio

Strong public opposition has changed the government’s direction before. It can again. Let’s not let the Endangered Species Act become endangered itself.
