Spider-Man hands. 🕷️

I like the connection I feel with my feet when I push energy through the palms of my hands.

Imagine shooting a web like Spider-Man.

That little bit of intention through the palms can help connect the hands, arms and upper body to what’s happening underneath you.

It’s not about making a big gesture. It’s about finding a physical connection that helps organize the movement.

Sometimes changing what you’re doing with your hands can change what you feel all the way down to your feet.

Having a hard time getting a step?

Take a look at your hands.

Sometimes they can tell you where the rest of your body is going astray.

Are they grabbing? Reaching? Tensing? Trying to help you force the step?

Your hands can reveal effort happening elsewhere in the body before you’re even aware of it.

Pay attention to what they’re telling you.

Sometimes the clue to what’s happening in your feet is sitting right there in your hands.

I look at the connection between rise + resistance when explaining wings to my students.

Find the catch point. Feel where the floor gives you something to work against.

From there, continue to rise and fall while staying connected to the music.

Don’t chase the wing itself. Find the relationship between the floor, the resistance and the rise.

The wing is in there.

The closer you are to the wing, the sharper and quicker it can pop off.

Similarly, the lower your heel, and the further away you are from the wing, the slower and broader it can become.

Your entire body shape and the way you launch into the step will influence the shape and characteristics of the sound you create.

Try different launches. Change your shape. Change your approach. Listen to what happens.

Use that exploration to find more dynamic range in your wings and other steps.

It’s not about finding the one right way.

It’s about being intentional and discovering the range of choices you want available in your palette.

Your sound doesn’t come from your feet alone.

The way you organize your entire body affects the tone, dynamics and feel of your tap dancing.

One way I learned to understand this was through emulation.

Instead of only trying to copy someone’s steps, I would try to understand the physical choices surrounding them. Their posture. Their weight placement. The shapes they made. How their whole body responded to the rhythm.

Sometimes getting closer to how someone moved helped me get closer to how they sounded.

Once I understood that relationship, I could start changing things and finding what worked for me.

Borrow the shape. Find the sound. Then make it yours.

New setup for single wings.

How you launch yourself from the floor has everything to do with what you’ll get out of your wing.

There are a lot of ways to set it up. Variety is great. Just make it intentional.

Tap dancer Chris Erk performs high-energy choreography to Puddle of Mudd’s 2001 rock hit Blurry, matching complex footwork to the song’s heavy guitar riffs in a minimalist studio setting.
