Honored to have Rick Lowe in our collection—a true architect of social practice. From Project Row Houses to redistricting maps that confront power and place, his work redefines what art can do. This isn’t just a piece for us—it’s part of a legacy

One of our favorite parts is our lil’ man with the presentation of the work 🥰💫

The KKK’s legacy is often discussed through the lens of the American South, yet their presence in California is rarely part of the conversation. Their influence stretched far beyond one region, leaving lasting scars on communities across the country. Rebecca Bee Boggs and Esteban Whiteside’s works place these histories in dialogue, connecting the Klan’s reach with the destruction of Greenwood during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Remembering means confronting the stories that are too often left out. #AmericanHistory #TulsaMassacre #Greenwood #ArtMatters #SupportLivingArtists by @thetetacollection

Mississippi River, 2023
72”x72”

“The idea for Mississippi River began not in the studio, but with a conversation. Early in
the pandemic, as I walked toward the Museum of Modern Art, my friend and mentor
Sam Gilliam called. With great energy, Sam described the Mississippi River not as a symbol, but as a living system shaped by history, ecology, and the Indigenous
communities along its banks.
As the conversation unfolded, he linked the river to abstraction: fluid, always in motion,
and resistant to fixed form. He saw abstraction as connected to meaning rather than separate from it. Just as water moves around obstacles, applies pressure over time, and creates new terrain, so too could abstraction. The river didn’t become something
to illustrate but something to learn from.
That idea stayed with me as I continued through the museum. Moving through the galleries, I began to think about abstraction as an active process rather than a closed system. I have always admired Sam’s work for its openness to material experimentation and its refusal to remain still. His artistic practice showed me that abstraction could respond to lived experience while remaining formally rigorous.
This way of thinking deepened later, during a visit to the home of Pamela Joyner and Fred Giuffrida. There, I encountered works by Sam Gilliam, Frank Bowling, and Jack Whitten hanging in close proximity to one another. Made in the 1960s and 70s, these paintings shared a similar approach to mark-making. They appeared to use Afro picks as tools, a reminder that mark-making can carry cultural and political meaning, not just visual effect.
Out of these experiences, Mississippi River took shape. I combined glass, gemstones, a large resin slab, and acrylic paint to create a surface that shifts between transparency and density, movement and resistance. The painting does not depict the river. Instead, it draws from the fluid logic of abstraction itself.” - Alteronce Gumby by @thetetacollection

Spent time in the studios of some incredible artists. There’s something special about hearing the story behind the work and the direction it’s evolving toward. Truly appreciative. 🙏🏾
