The end of trip feels so fulfilling. You get back to the nearest town, in our case Ely, cleanup, eat “real” food, and sleep in a “real” bed. You miss the work, the adventure, the lack of cell service, and the feeling of being out there. But you relish in rehashing the trips best moments, sharing more time together, and laughing about any trip mishaps or hardships, now just memories.

I came out of this trip feeling strong // reconnected to the earth, to memories of my childhood // grateful for this experience and the 12 BWCA trips that proceeded it, grateful to have the outdoor knowledge to plan a trip like this— all which I never would’ve had without my first trip here // energized for more adventure // loved by family + myself

✨ on the last night before flying out of Minneapolis, we exchanged photos, drew our trip permanently onto our maps, and sealed this one into the memory archives… until next time, North Woods ✨

𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 🎣

We didn’t get to fish as much as we wanted, but it was amazing when we got the chance. I was able to catch a Northern on our first night out + we caught some Small Mouth later in the trip. We weren’t relying on fishing for meals, so it was a fun protein add when we got them. Catching, filleting, and cooking the fish well— to pay homage to the great gifts of the water— is such a fun process for me.

One of the best parts about canoe trips is you’re less limited by food weight than you often are when hiking or backpacking. Think fun spice kits, camp cocktails, pancakes, oils, butters, baking mixes, etc… This years’ highlights were first + last night Old Fashioneds, Mediterranean pasta, fluffy pancake breaky, turkey + beef chili w/ cheddar chunks, falafel burgers w/ mash, and vanilla-honey-maple lattes + mochas each morning— all at our BWCA campsites, providing amazing Northwoods views and waterfront seating!

The voyager way— dipping into clear, cool lake water, gliding through reeds and lilies, scraping onto sandy rocks as we made landfall. New green bags, river bags heaved from the boats, thrown over our shoulders. Canoe yokes supported our We-no-nahs, as we tipped forward off the ground and further onto the trails. Rods covered through trees, over mossy rocks, muddy flats, along silt and sand shorelines, to pile everything back into our canoes and continue. Dip. Carry. Drip…propelling us on.

5.5days, 60miles of BWCA // 45 paddling & 15 portaging

I love the preparation for an adventure— getting gear together, laying it out, lists on scrap paper, traveling through the airport, ready to meet the group…
We arrived in Minneapolis and spent the next day-and-a-half making our way North to Duluth (co-op food stock-up, local outdoor store perusing) and North further to Ely to meet with our outfitter (gear rentals, trip tips, map planning). We fueled-up @insula.restaurant , did last minute shopping @piragisoutfitting , and stayed at the trusty CCO Bunkhouse ✨ before heading out to our put-in Sunday morning. 30 years since my first trip at 7, 20 years since my last trip at 17 and it was still so magical to be in Ely again, one of the gateways to the @bwcacom .

NATIONAL RESCUE DOG DAY

Seems like the perfect time to share King Leonidas, our new puppy. When we rescued Sir Cadbury from TCI through @potcakeplacek9rescue last year, I had never owned a dog. Now we have two 🖤 🖤

They bring so much fun to each day, but they also greatly reduce the stress of everyday life & enhance the balance in my life. And though these two look like brothers, Leo was rescued in MT through Tiny Tails K-9 Rescue, who works with local fosters to help their dogs find forever homes! Potcake Place and Tiny Tails— @brewctyclmbr and I are so grateful.
