As I am preparing the traditional trick or treat basket for the kids, i couldn’t help but think about unusual scents with a haunting backstory. Halloween perfume roundups usually lean hard on sweet gourmands. If you prefer your seasonal scents cold, metallic, or steeped in dark history, these five belong on your radar. These niche, indie, and cult scents rely on lore far darker and more atmospheric than a typical autumn blend. Here is the backstory behind each bottle: 1. My Past Selves’ Flowers by Toskovat’ (2023)  A quiet reflection on the tragedy of receiving appreciation, or flowers, only after we are gone.  The Profile: White tobacco and wilting orchids set against a somber base of damp soil and hinoki incense.  2. But Not Today by Filippo Sorcinelli (2018)  An intense olfactory nod to the psychological tension and blood-stained romance of Hannibal Lecter.  The Profile: Cold metallic notes and animalic leather clashing with innocent carnation.  3. Carmilla by Immortal Perfumes (2022)  The Rooted in Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic 1872 gothic novella, capturing immortal obsession and dark romance.  The Profile: Crushed jammy black cherries over wilted funeral roses in a cold, wood-paneled crypt.  4. Istanbul @atelierrebul A warm 26°C, a beautiful autumn light, and an unexpected hit of spice to clear the air. Today’s scent is Istanbul by Atelier Rebul, pulled straight from one of their classic refreshing towels, that was gifted by my best friend from Belgium. @audreyvos . The opening brings an almost medicinal blast of clove and cinnamon that feels like an invigorating skin treatment. It has that hot, therapeutic feeling that instantly wakes up the senses. As it settles, the sharp edges soften into a dense, cozy layer of amber, warm woods, and musk. It’s clean, spicy, and grounded, with just enough heat to cut through an October afternoon. Top: Bergamot, Cinnamon, Clove, Saffron Heart: Jasmine, Violet, Orchid Base: Vanilla, Amber, Musk, Sandalwood, Cedarwood ~~~ Un doux 26°C, une belle lumière d’automne et une envolée d’épices inattendue pour rafraîchir l’esprit. Aujourd’hui, direction Istanbul d’Atelier Rebul, capturé dans l’une de leurs lingettes rafraîchissantes classiques - un petit cadeau de ma meilleure amie de Belgique, @audreyvos. Dès les premières secondes, l’envolée offre un souffle presque médicinal de clou de girofle et de cannelle, qui rappelle l’effet tonifiant d’un soin sur la peau. Il y a cette sensation chaude et thérapeutique qui réveille immédiatement les sens.  En se posant, les notes plus vives s’adoucissent pour laisser place à un fond dense et réconfortant d’ambre, de bois chauds et de musc. C’est propre, épicé et bien ancré, avec juste ce qu’il faut de chaleur pour traverser cette après-midi d’octobre. An autumn delicate scented grace, morning light breaks through the window. It leaves a pale gold streak on the floor. And that first spray is like cold air catching the warmth inside my home. There’s some sort of dark chewy sweetened orange dried fruits mixed with a clean brightness that has the smell of freshly peeled mandarin. When then it lands, on the skin, it softens like a slow drop of honey that spreads over waxy Gardenia petals. It feels velvety, it has that slightly powdery warmth that sits right at your skin. Twelve hours later, the flowers and fruits have fused but not so much in sweetness as it leaves its scent expression to a resinous hum of ambery-musk. It smells intimate. It smells like pure “yeoun” - the Korean word for the resonance left behind after someone leaves. A tribute to the late, brilliant Olivier Pescheux and his mastery of balance. In Divine Vanille, he stripped vanilla of its “sugary clichés” and restored its dark, carnal dignity. This is the story of its skin-deep evolution. ✨ ✨The Opening: Fire and Illusion The first spray yields shadow and friction. A sharp crack of black pepper meets the dry heat of cinnamon bark. Together, they pull off a spectacular sensory illusion, evoking a boozy, aged-rum accord and the comforting warmth of cherry pipe tobacco before the main character even takes the stage. ✨The Heart: Suede and Smoke As the spices soften, Pescheux’s true genius comes to live. He worked with a Madagascar vanilla absolute and made it textile-like. Osmanthus absolute brings a velvety, peach-skin suede texture, while a soft veil of incense drifts through. The vanilla wraps around the smoke, revealing facets of blond tobacco and dried fruits. It balances perfectly on a knife-edge of bitter and sweet. ✨ The Drydown: A Quiet Resonance Hours later, the fragrance settles into an intimate, glowing hum. Venezuelan tonka bean and Siam benzoin merge, bringing a nostalgic scent of old book paper and warm skin. Anchored by a clean scaffolding of Texas cedar (Texas Baby 🤠), and earthy patchouli, it does leave a luminous cloud of silky musk. Nanyang | Maison de l’Asie Perfumer: François Merle-Baudoin 📍 Place & Time: I imagine the veranda of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, late 1980s (just before a monsoon storm). That is the strange thing about Nanyang, as it develops, it gets older, in a good way! ☕ The Opening: Clean, 1990s weightlessness. Green tea, bergamot, humid air, and white linen. Think somewhere between CK One and Bvlgari Pour Homme. 🪵 The Heart: The freshness turns dark and bitter. Black tea, dry saffron, and black pepper shift the mood into something much heavier and maybe a bit medicinal. 💼 The Drydown: Maybe austere, dry white leather and severe sandalwood and gives me the old-school, 1980s chypre elegance. Definitely more masculine to me. The Memory: A humid veranda at the Raffles Hotel, late 1980s. Black tea cooling next to a worn Hermès leather suitcase as a monsoon storm builds beyond the gardens. ___ L’analogie et la mémoire : Si ce parfum était un lieu, ce serait la véranda de l’Hôtel Raffles à Singapour, quelque part à la fin des années 1980. L’air y est lourd, saturé par l’humidité d’un orage de mousson imminent (l’esprit très vert, herbeux et terreux de Safari de Ralph Lauren). Sur une table en teck sombre, une théière laisse échapper les vapeurs amères d’un thé brûlant. A quiet pool stretches wide beneath a sky where birds cut through soft, brushed clouds. Behind a veil of the fragrance spray, the marble statue of Diana watches on… She stays at the water’s edge. The air opens with a bright, golden radiance, carrying the delicate spice of a lily in full bloom. He comes up behind her, silent on the grass. She knows he is there as his shadow falls across her hands. He steps close, his warm chest meeting the cool mist on her nape. When his fingers brush her throat, her pulse flutters like a trapped bird. He turns her around in the open light. Their lips hover a fraction of an inch apart. In that suspended breath, the bright floral opening softens into refined petals, a quiet, silk-soft intimacy building between them. Then he closes the gap. The touch begins breathless and warm, but as her hands clutch his coat, the restraint snaps. The velvety blossom yields to a clean, lingering base of crisp green leaves, a kiss stolen in broad daylight, luminous, romantic, and long overdue. This my olfactive story. ELOREA in KTown, Los Angeles is a house of fragrances that offers scents that is inspired by Korean ingredients and stories. Their compositions are very well balanced and offer a scent for every mood, every types of moments in life. They also have a house line that I found soothing and relaxing. We enjoyed with my friend the late afternoon ambiance and spend about an hour smelling and reviewing the ones we liked that day. I ended up getting With You, and will share my thoughts soon, while my friend got an airy marine ambery scent called Haenyeo. The matcha and coffee bar was closed so this is a great “excuse” to go back and get a full experience of pairing scents. Legend has it Federico Fellini asked for extra fresh basil with every meal because he believed it was an aphrodisiac. @vilhelm_parfumerie took that cool story and brought it to life for Basilico & Fellini. It opens with a torn basil leaf and some aquatic fruitiness from the dragon fruit, softened by damp violet leaf and the warm, golden smell of hay and green grass, which I really like. Photorealistic and green, but with a surprising softness underneath. I took it out to the Bayou Bend Gardens, but I find it a bit lost in the high summer heat. To me, it needs a crisper air to bring out that green herbal volute, so I’m glad the seasons are finally turning and be able to reach for it much more, over the next few weeks (hopefully).
