Review: Bangkai - Bangkai

New Review online.
Link to magazine in the bio

“The Dutch black metal underground has never been confined by rigid boundaries. Musicians rarely disappear; they simply resurface under a different banner. Bangkai is a perfect example of that. Five familiar faces from bands such as Eschaton Holocaust and Stalen Gezicht join forces here, not to revisit familiar ground, but to explore an even rawer and more direct form of extremity. The band’s name—Indonesian for “corpse”—perfectly reflects the atmosphere of this self-titled debut: cold, filthy, and stripped of every unnecessary embellishment.”

I spent the day today with K.v.H. from the band @faceless.entity and many others (the list of his projects is extremely long). He also runs the label @thethroat666.

We walked just over 17k steps. I showed him medieval sites as well as classic tourist attractions in Prague. I am grateful for every day like this, even though it was painful for me.

We played with F.E. at a I.R.M. in Portugal and have been in contact ever since.

However, I would like to take this opportunity to mention that a benefit compilation is in the works (yes, because of my current situation), to which Faceless Entity will also contribute an unreleased song. I won’t list all the names, but just over 10 great names from the underground BM scene across various countries have already confirmed their collaboration. There are some truly amazing projects among them. Many are working on exclusive tracks, while some will pull out unreleased archival songs. I am really looking forward to it and will release more details later.

“Folteraar is back. After an absence of no less than ten years, K, the man behind an impressive number of bands and projects, returns to the spotlight. Joining him is drummer G, known from the Limburg-based bands Witchfukker and Praefator.”

Faceless Entity stands for harrowing and frightening art not composed for the masses. The Dutch horde reflects on life and death and wants the listener to surrender to the fear of the unknown, allowing this fear to permeate their psyche. Stylistically, their music can be described as raw atmospheric Black Metal. Slow and somber tempos create a lethargy and overwhelm the listener with an eerie and oppressive dread. The grating guitar sound and unpolished production further enhance the dark atmosphere. Also atypical are the dark and harsh vocals, which occasionally alternate with piercing screams and clean vocals. Their works are characterized by a profound fascination with the dark aura of the individual and the soul in the face of the ominous and threatening. So far, they have released two full-length albums and five demos.
