Apologies for my quietness the past few weeks! I was enjoying my honeymoon in the Loire Valley which was delightfully filled with bookstores, great reading spots, and perfect autumn weather by @thethumbedpage

In 3 days I get to marry this person! Someone who has never stopped me from having fun or going in a bookstore or dimmed my light. I’m so grateful to have found someone that also loves genre fiction, long series, buddy reads, and is in his own bookclub. He is every tumblr quote I saved to my school laptop in 2009 and I can’t wait. taken in Huxley and Hiro by @thethumbedpage

Feeling the pull towards spooky season, but a little nervous about horror? The Ending Writes Itself is a thriller that may just get you in the mood, without *too* many scares. Writers trapped in a house, a mounting body count, the wilds of a Scottish isle. What else could you need? 👻 by @thethumbedpage

“Everyone’s scared all the time. That’s the thing you’ve got to tell yourself. They might be scared of different things from you. Things that don’t scare you a bit. Like heights, or failure, or wanting to piss then not being able to go. But everyone’s scared of something. And even if they’re not, it helps to think they are. The brave ones are just good at pretending, and pretending’s just lying by another name.”

When Joe Abercrombie announced The Devil’s came out I was devastated. Why couldn’t he go back to the First Law universe? WHY was he writing about a CHILD POPE? And how could these characters ever match my beloved Northmen.

Well, Joe Abercrombie did what he did best: surprise me. I love the weird world of the Devils that is both alien and familiar, the ragtag group of characters, and the magic world he built. by @thethumbedpage

🕰️ Two Minute Book Reviews: The Sentence by Louise Erdrich 🕰️

📚 Why I read it: It was a bookclub pick!

🔥 What I got out of it: Like all her books, The Sentence was incredibly lyrical, gorgeous, and feels unrelentingly true. The Sentence will make you cry, laugh, and cringe from reality of it all. It is a wonderful portrayal of working in retail AND interracial dynamics AND growing in middle age AND the confusion of what to do when your life is cleaved so clearly into a “before” and an “after”. My one complaint: this book was WAY more focus on COVID than any of the hype around the book prepared me for. While told beautifully and it made sense within the arc, I was surprised at how focused the story was on it. So, be a little prepared for that. If I had known I don’t think it would have taken me out of the story as much.

👻 Read if you want to experience: A “cozy” idea of a ghost that spools out into so much more.

📖 Summary: “The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store’s most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls’ Day, but she simply won’t leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading “with murderous attention,” must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief, astonishment, isolation, and furious reckoning.” by @thethumbedpage

Three (more) ways to read more:
☀️ Everyone always talks about reading before bed, but what about a morning read? Add a 20-minute block to your morning to read in bed for a slower wake up, or to enjoy with your coffee

🫂 Read with someone! You don’t need a whole bookclub to do a buddy read. Try something out with a sibling, a friend, or even a romantic partner. It’s also one of my favorite ways to connect with friends who have moved away

🍸 Take yourself out on a book date! Go to your favorite bar or restaurant and bring your latest read. A bar near me has a late night happy hour and I love doing this with my latest reads when I’m feeling restless. by @thethumbedpage

Forever my happy place. Indie bookstores will always have my heart - this one is in my hometown: @huxandhiro

But other favorites include: @solidstatedc (can confirm their membership is worth it), @neverendingstorybooks (the perf bookstore near my in-laws), and my first indie bookstore where I bought my first book ever with my own money @browseaboutbooks
