🌺 Remembering Lāhainā — Three Years Later 🌺

August 8th, marks three years since the devastating fire that changed Lāhainā forever.

On a day filled with so many emotions and memories, on The Time Machine Radio Show, we had a number of guests join us on the broadcast for the third anniversary of the Maui wildfires. We had the privilege of having filmmaker and songwriter Paul Venus on the air for a conversation about Lāhainā, music, memory and two songs that have become very personal to Paul: "LUNAS – Guardians of "Lāhaināluna" and "Kuleana (My Destiny)".

It was a pleasure to have Paul on the air discussing the two new songs and the amazing music videos made for the songs, but it was about much more than getting the word out about new music.

It was an opportunity to remember.

For those of us who called Lāhainā home, August 8th will never be just another date on the calendar.

We remember the lives that were lost. We remember the families who lost their homes and livelihoods. We remember the streets where we grew up, the schools we attended, the places we worked, the beaches where we played, and the community where we celebrated, fell in love, raised families and made memories that will remain with us forever.

And three years later, we remember something else:

Lāhainā is still here.

It is in its people.

It is in the generations of students who have walked the halls of Lāhaināluna.
It is in the stories passed from grandparents to grandchildren.
It is in the music, history, traditions and culture that no fire can erase.

That spirit is at the heart of these two songs and music videos that Paul created.

"LUNAS – Guardians of Lahainaluna" is Paul's tribute to Lāhaināluna and the generations who have carried its traditions and spirit forward.

"Kuleana (My Destiny)" is about the responsibility we inherit to remember where we came from, care for what has been entrusted to us, and carry those memories forward for generations yet to come.

I am so proud of Maria. This is such a cool video clip that the Ritz Carlton Waikiki has been promoting featuring various employees in an ongoing series. As a pseudo Godfather, I've know Maria her entire life. I held her when she was a newborn infant. Now she's all grown up and retains her zest for life, humor, friends and family.

- Michael McCartney

Here's what the Ritz Carlton Waikiki shared:

Meet Maria Capllonch, our Door Attendant, proudly born and raised on the east side of Oʻahu in Kailua.

When she’s not working, Maria treasures quiet moments watching the sunrise with her parents and finding renewal in the tranquil waters of Kailua—traditions that keep her deeply connected to a special area she calls home.

For nearly 10 years, Maria has had the privilege of welcoming guests upon arrival and bidding them a fond farewell at departure. Over the years, she has watched families return season after season, celebrating milestones, creating memories, and seeing children grow into young adults. These enduring relationships are what she treasures most, transforming guests into extended ʻohana.

This is her story of Oʻahu.

Above the "L" and at the bottom of the "L", we bid Aloha to Mike Yoshida on the top of Mount Pu'u Pa'u Pa'u as the sun began to set to one of Mike's favorite songs "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas. After spending time with our hearts remembering Mike, we patiently waited into the darkness of night until the graduating Class of 2026 of Lāhaināluna High School was ready for the traditional annual lighting ceremony of the "L" to celebrate their achievements, memories and their future.

We are looking forward to seeing “Storm Rider: Legend Of Hammerhead” with our childhood pal Spike Yamamoto tonight. Our dear friend Sabrina Culver was the Associate Producer on this motion picture, so we’ll be cheering when her name appears on the big screen. Executive Producer Neb Chupin may be our radio guest next month, so that would be something to look forward to as well. If you’re looking for something different to watch at the movie theater this week, tonight is the last week of the theatrical run at most theaters, so feel free to join us tonight.

Singer-songwriter Anya Marina has a new album, new single, keeping busy touring and shares her cool side project with Matt Pond on a special filmed segment of The Time Machine. Anya has been a guest on the broadcast several times since her debut album "Miss Halfway" was released back in 2004. We've always appreciated her as a long time friend of The Time Machine and her appearances on the show. A special thanks to CBS News editor extraordinaire Paul Venus for making this possible.

Anya Marina has slowed down Icona Pop's "I Love It" composed by Charlie XCX with Patrik Berger and Linus Eklöw and made it into an atmospheric masterpiece. This sounds fantastic on the radio. The same year that Charlie XCX performed the song live ten years ago at Glastonbury, after the success of Icona Pop's hit record, Anya Marina recorded her arrangement. Now, a decade later, Anya has revisited her cover and has a new cool music video directed by Scott Coffey.

Rachael Yamagata released her single "Birds" on the same day that we had our second anniversary of the Lāhainā and Kula wildfires. Lyrically, it was just what we needed to get through the day and night and the entire weekend.

No...not George Wendt. An entire generation knows both the crowd chant "Norm!" and "Da Bears". Seventy-six years old is too young with years of comedic timing still to come now extinguished. My heart goes out to his wife Bernadette, his children, family and dear friends. Aloha 'Oe...George...you will be deeply missed...
