For Hiko, that taste was Taiwanese tea. It wasn’t until he embarked on a journey to Japan and Europe and started sharing tea from home with friends that he realised how extraordinary something he had always taken for granted could be.

Years later, he created Wan Cha 灣茶 back home in Taiwan, where “Wan” also means “us” in Taiwanese. And that little word says a lot about what he is building.

Here, tea can come with music, language exchange, markets, parties, or even a Taiwanese soap opera challenge. There is no need to know the right way to brew or the right words to describe what you’re drinking. Hiko simply wants to make tea feel like something that belongs in our lives again, and create a place where we can belong, too. 💚

For iSSUE 003, we invited our cover illustrator, An Chen @anchenillustration , to interpret tea in their own way — bringing a fresh visual perspective to a theme explored across cultures, stories and everyday rituals throughout the magazine. That’s one of our favourite parts of independent publishing: giving different creative minds the same canvas, and seeing where they take it.
