RECOMMENDING: totally stealing this idea from the NYT Magazine. Enthusiastically suggest you check it out. I am a city dweller, a beacon to every bitey, stingy insect. I don’t hike unless it involves hailing a cab. Seriously though, check out the National Park social media. It’s deranged and hilarious in all the best ways. If you’re inclined I would like the merch gifted to me. I will proudly wear a t-shirt that reads: Don’t Pet the Fluffy Cows. I actually covet a shirt that states: Winner of Fat Bear week. How is there no fantasy league for that? by @thetlpowers

On September 11, 2001 we had been in this house for all of 12 days. We had painted and scraped every penny together to buy it. I drove my youngest son to kindergarten in Springfield, Virginia an easy 20 minute trip, on the way back I was hearing about the planes hitting the World Trade Center, buildings I visited as a child. It was all confusion and disbelief I got home in Alexandria, turned on the news to understand what was going on, and then a plane hit the Pentagon, the force of the impact / explosion bowed these windows. Then there were sirens that didn’t stop for three days. They closed the freeways and my husband’s place of work disconnected the phones. Eventually he reached me and had to drive surface streets to collect our child from school. I’ll never forget that day, sirens still make me a little nervous. I post because it was a profound memory for me, though I was far removed. There are young people who think of it as history. by @thetlpowers
