On August 23rd the Trail Forge began its journey through Accokeek Maryland guided by Sebi whose deep Piscataway lineage opened our eyes to the land beneath our feet. Since then Sebi has continued to create pathways of learning by inviting us into Red Cedar Farms in Nanjemoy for a weekend of stories, history and connection.We shared meals, paddled canoes as one and learned the living history of the DMV and the Chesapeake Bay. This was not just a retreat. It was a remembrance. Deep gratitude to Sebi and Brenda for welcoming us with such love and warmth. by @thetrailforge

Trail Forge 004To call this hike amazing would be an understatement. What we experienced was something deeper. An encounter with nature’s sacred rhythm and the beauty of genuine connection.We gathered near the lot, hydrating, climbing trees, and resting in nature’s quiet before forming a circle. Each person shared their name, creative process, and what brings them joy. With each introduction, we moved our bodies through stretches, an idea beautifully offered by Lalee, grounding us before the journey ahead.Our first stop was a still body of water where we talked and began to open. Then came the climb toward the waterfall. We moved slowly, together, with care. No one was left behind. When we reached the falls, it felt like stepping into a living story. Divine, wild, and filled with joy. We shared laughter, stories, and stillness, embraced by water and land.On the way back, Nadi led a First Aid demo, teaching us how to use a tourniquet and preparing us with wisdom rooted in care. We closed the day with watermelon and gratitude.This wasn’t just a hike. It was a collective forging of spirit, strength, and presence. Yesterday, three incredible Trail Forgers, Alya, Jala, and Von, set out together on the trail. We slowed down, listened to the earth, sat with the water, and took time to witness the life all around us. This past week with Dark Matter U was a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when community gathers around a shared purpose. Together we moved through Buffalo, learning the history held within its streets, architecture, and the spirit of the city itself.We stood before Niagara Falls and witnessed the immense power of water, reflecting on the wisdom and force carried by the natural world. We also deepened our understanding of Buffalo’s sacred place in the Underground Railroad, honoring the courage, resilience, and liberation woven into that landscape. On June 21st, The Trail Forge gathered at Denkyem Ase Gallery to immerse ourselves in African art, music, and culture. At The Trail Forge, we believe that reconnecting with our ancestral roots helps us better understand ourselves, our communities, and our purpose.A special thank you to Nigel for welcoming us into such an intentional space filled with history, creativity, and ancestral presence. We opened in circle, reflecting on how our creative expression is connected to Africa and the traditions that continue to live through us today.We spent the afternoon sharing stories, laughing, learning, and deepening our connection to one another. Nigel also guided us to Union Square Park, offering historical insights that helped us see the land through a broader cultural lens.Understanding African history and culture is a core part of the Trail Forge mission. We look to the Motherland as an ancestral beacon whose wisdom continues to guide us toward deeper connection, healing, and collective prosperity. Trail Forge 013 was a day of true connection and peace. We gathered together at Anacostia park where we joined in circle to share about our story and shared passions. We walked along the Anacostia Riverwalk trail where we enjoyed the beautiful day and each other’s company. It was so wonderfulmeeting new trail forgers and growing our intentions together. Day three of the Radical Release retreat was all about the participating fathers about families. We rose with a family activation of tapping with @touchedbyfinesse and fueled up for the day with watermelon juice. We then joined a family hike led by @thetrailforge at Sweet Run State Park, where we walked barefoot through a meadow and drank water from a natural spring.After the hike, we returned to the house to prepare for the closing ceremony led by @taylordeed and her partner, Belove. The transformations we witnessed in that space are hard to put into words, as the deepest healing happened through the body. We danced, sang, and drummed through the reasons we were all brought to this space. Although the ceremony ran long, each father stayed to the end to receive their song.The next day we rose to enjoy a final meal together before saying goodbye to our participants as most of us went our separate ways. We are so grateful to one of our participating fathers, Herb, for offering his transportation business @agg_transportation_llc to bus a few of our participants and facilitators back to their respective homes.The retreat continued for a few of our facilitators with a trip to a local winery, Breaux Vineyards, where we sipped wine while debriefing the weekend and the work ahead.We are so grateful to our generous host, Paul, for offering us two additional nights for free. This retreat also would not have been possible without the nourishing support of food sponsors: @enjouifarm, @earth2melonnation, and @marthastable. One of the biggest harms of the carceral system is the way it destroys Black families. Of course, this is by design, and why the prison system is akin to modern slavery.Our Radical Release program was created to address this harm. A major theme of the program is family reintegration. Over the course of a free retreat, families come together to heal through different forms of therapeutic art making.We break bread together, share laughter, joy, and tears, and form a massive extended family that connects our kinship bonds across family units, bloodlines, and histories. By the end of the retreat, we are sharing space together in a way that feels like home.This is why we call the program Radical Release. We are freeing ourselves from carceral modes of being and remembering what it is like to relate to each other as kin.
