: 1979 - LET THE MERCHANDISING BEGIN:

As ROCKY HORROR transitioned from stage play, to film, to cult classic, merchandising was the next logical step and revenue stream.

This poster magazine came out in 1979 when I was a senior in high school — perfect timing to feed my fan-frenzy. The publication presents as a magazine and unfolds into two large posters — FRANK abusing RIFF RAFF with his whip and FRANK posing with MAGENTA and COLUMBIA.

The publication was produced by Star Fleet Production and also served as a promotional piece for the mail-order sale of ROCKY HORROR audio recordings.

: RAYNER BOURTON ON ROCKY:

“THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW - AS I REMEMBER IT” and “THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW - GOING GLOBAL” by RAYNER BOURTON - The Original Rocky from 1973. Published in 2025 and 2026 respectively.

I recently purchased these two books from Amazon by RAYNER BOURTON, the original ROCKY in the 1973 stage production performed upstairs at THE ROYAL COURT in London.

Book one is about that initial production and book two is about RAYNER’S involvement in the global expansion of the production beginning in 1974.

You can hear RAYNER’S original stage version of THE SWORD OF DAMOCLES on YouTube. I rather like his high-pitched vocalization of the tune. It’s very distinct and infectious — quite different from the film version of the song.

While PETER HINWOOD played the role of ROCKY HORROR on screen, the vocals were sung by Australian recording artist Trevor White — uncredited. Also, while White’s vocals were used in the film's audio mix, the official soundtrack album primarily features vocals recorded by singer Brian Engel.

Evidently it takes three men to bring Frank’s creation of masculine perfection to life. In the end, they definitely pulled it off.

This is cool. It’s so cool in fact that I’m making it into multiple (14) posts to showcase the design and ultimately each of the character illustrations and corresponding cast photos included.

This is the Japanese souvenir program for their 2011 touring production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. It’s absolutely beautifully designed and printed on thick beautiful stock with a 5th iridescent ink added to the cover. The 76 page book measures 9.25 x 9.25 inches and is packed full of graphics, photos and information — that I can’t read. From the program, it certainly looks like it was a lavish production.
