Every day my baby changes. A new tooth. A new favorite book. A new ability. A new connection. A new emotion. So many new words. I’m thankful for the little achievements chart I made for his first birthday, the one that reminds me that if I was counting words like I do books, he only had six and two possibles then. Now, the words come so quickly I don’t catch them all. The last one I wrote down in my Notes app under Lenox’s Words was “light,” at 93. That was maybe six weeks ago.

Every day I wonder if he’ll use words as beautifully as his father, if he’ll love like him too, if his round cheeks will stay, if he’ll always clap for himself, if this world will ever be worthy of someone so, so special.

Lenox was born of so much love and desire that it spills out of him every day. He is absolutely remarkable and on my hardest days, his very existence sustains me. I remember thinking the labor of bringing him into the world was the most magical, beautiful thing I’d ever experienced, but now, every single day with him seems to jump the line. I’m so thankful he is ours. I’m so thankful for the radical defiance of hope he provides in these dark times, so it feels only right to share his beautiful, little self right now. Going into labor on our two-year wedding anniversary meant that year three unfolded in the chaos and wonder of becoming a family of three: Daddy, Mommy, and Lenox.

Early in our journey through parenthood, when the fear of the unknown and the weight of uncertainty settled into my bones, you sent me this video we took minutes after getting married-a reminder of the joy that waits on the other side of new and uncertain.

I’ve watched it a hundred times this past year. And every single time, I’ve thought the same thing: You are, and always will be, the greatest occasion of my life. #3yearsdown taken in Cedar Lakes Estate by @thetriplegoddess

275 days ago today, a select few of us (including myself) were welcomed into the very prestigious and tightly-knit community that is Defying Legal Gravity.

Where every Saturday stretching back since October, we spent hours upon hours at Fordham Law School diving into the first-year law school curriculum, engaging in thought-provoking and relevant discussion and embarked on exciting community-building excursions. All while balancing the demands of being full-time high school students.

And in true bittersweet fashion, said goodbye to some of the closest friends/mentors we’ve made over the past academic year at our graduation 5 days ago. A graduation we created not just for us, but for our community itself. We led workshops, presentations and lectures that taught immigration pathways/law, contract negotiation, data privacy and a slew of other very relevant topics our communities deserve to be informed on.

It was truly an honor and pleasure to have been a part of this fellowship! I’m deeply grateful to Craig, Diana and my peers for the lasting impact they’ve had on me. And especially the dynamic duo Craig and Diana for allowing us to learn from and witness their remarkable legal minds in action.

Wow a winner! I really don’t have the words to describe what it is like to be given the honor of wining the David Prize. Being honored as a visionary New Yorker is kind of a dream come true. I love this city so deeply and Defying Legal Gravity was really born out of a desire to give back to New York and its people what it has given me-the tools, the knowledge, the resilience and the fight to make shit happen. And that’s what DLG is doing by breaking the monopoly on legal knowledge and giving New York City youth the same foundation as every lawyer in America.

We teach the first-year law school curriculum because it provides the key to unlocking access to the law. Learning the first-year subjects -contracts, criminal law, property law, civil procedure, constitutional law, and torts- equips our students with the tools they need to comprehend how the legal system works as a whole. These are the essential building blocks that allow anyone to protect themselves, access their rights, and effectively navigate the legal system.

When our scholars master these courses, they don’t just gain theoretical knowledge—they learn how to utilize the law in real life. But we just don’t teach them these classes, we teach them through a critical race theory lens so that students have a framework to critique the law. This kind of knowledge is transformative, giving individuals the power to identify legal issues, challenge unjust systems, and defend their rights.

Defying Legal Gravity is making this legal literacy available to everyone—not just those privileged enough to attend law school. And most importantly, putting the law in the hands of the people most capable of transforming it-our youth. That’s @craig__shep and my vision for New York and I am so thankful to have that vision celebrated through the David Prize. 🏆 by @thetriplegoddess

Another year of life. Half a decade through the best decade yet. In complete awe of this life still. All the good is still here and with it so much change- a new home, a new car, a new body, a tiny miracle…

I can’t believe how afraid I was a year ago of change when just around the corner was now. This year will be about surrendering. Let it all come.- let it make me always dream that life is bigger.

Wow, what an honor to be a finalist for the David Prize @davidprizenyc , a 200K prize for visionary New Yorkers with ideas for extraordinary change. Out of thousands of brilliant New Yorkers who love this city as much as I do, who spend day in and day out dreaming of ways to add to its bountifulness and beauty, I am so excited to be among these 15 amazing New Yorkers. For the last few years, @craig__shep and I have been pouring our hearts into uncovering what New York looks like when the power of the law is in the hands of the people. For the last two years, we have shared space with the most incredible young people who give us hope and make us believe that more is possible. Thank you to those students for the way you show up excited and ready to learn something that the world has tried to gatekeep and for our community for donating, inquiring, mentoring, lecturing, volunteering, and caring about the way we dream of a better New York. Whether or not we win this prize, the power of this work has led us here! The law is too important to our collective society to leave to lawyers, democratizing the law is the only way @defyinglegalgravity by @thetriplegoddess
