“We’ve all threatened to do it, but Matt Walker really did it. Walker’s bio includes the line “During his stint as a director, and while he was still represented by William Morris Agency, Matt decided to run away and join the circus. So in 1997, he left Los Angeles and was accepted into Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey’s Clown College.

As founder of LA’s Troubadour Theater with decades of sitcom and showbiz cred, he’s the clown-prince of clowning in Los Angeles, notably having trained with the astonishing Bill Irwin circa 1994, and worked with all manner of luminaries into the present. He says that Irwin, a clown’s clown known for his manic kinesthetic intelligence, gave him two gifts: first, a top hat, a standard clown’s prop, and more surprisingly, “…a sense of stillness, and the importance of relaxation onstage, especially when you’re doing something tricky.”

Revived in 2023 after a six-year makeover, the show must go on – the Ringling Bros. now operate without elephants, lions, tigers, ringmasters, or clowns. But Walker’s genius is in high demand. He’s just been tapped by A Noise Within @anoisewithin to consult on the upcoming production of Eugène Ionesco’s Exit the King.”
