I wrote this codex after reading “Your Next Five Moves” by @patrickbetdavid

In one of the chapters, he emphasized the importance of actually WRITING DOWN the values and principles you want your company to uphold. A guide to keep ourselves accountable for our actions.
Even the Captain.

The spirit of these principles are a blend of what my Mother and Father taught me and my siblings growing up.
As well as lessons I’ve learned along my journey.
From joy, from pain. All prerequisites in becoming the man it takes to achieve an impossible dream.

My hope for this Codex is to not only act as a compass for The Upstate Sound’s crew, but to inspire and guide other artists and labels. Even people and companies outside of our industry.

And while more laws may be added to the Codex as The Upstate Sound moves forward, these 14 shall be considered our founding principles.
Our declaration to the world as we move towards our mission, our purpose.

Flying our flag high 🏴‍☠️

BE A MAN is FINALLY here!! 💛💙

This EP is not just a new release, but it encapsulates this whole era of the band since going independent. I’m so excited for you to hear it, and some shoutouts are needed for everyone who made it possible.

@ben.shead, my partner in crime/manager from the very beginning. Writing, critiquing, marketing, budgeting, scheduling every trip, and simply being my punching bag through our hardest struggles (I’m only somewhat kidding)… “BE A MAN!” couldn’t exist without the man himself🥰

It’s always intimidating to bring your artistic vision to someone new, and depend on them to completely execute an idea that doesn’t even exist yet. But @royerobley said “lemme cook”… and literally invented the sound of WOM. Not only did he produce the EP and show off his INSANE 🥁 and 🎸 skills on nearly every track, but he has become a great friend and mentor to us Gen Z babies in the punk scene🖤

@dustinluttrellphotography never fails to make my visual ideas look even better than I can imagine 🔥 and ofc @punksterphotography & @andi.goodson kicking off this whole era with Voodoo Barbie’s aesthetic 🎀

@markhacz helped write Castle in Tennessee (in more ways than one🥰) and P/M/M Dear Devon. He’s been with me through my darkest nights, so he had to be the one to construct the song that tells my story. Also our INCREDIBLE writers and instrumentalists: @jackwenstrup, @braedenrawa, @zackisagoon, @tomcat182, @haven.west.veraguas

Thank you SO much to all our GoFundMe donors after the illegal takedown of Voodoo and Fraud, and @theupstatesound for stepping in as our new distributor afterwards. A huge thanks to Gail & Chris who helped get this project off the ground with our first trip to Chicago, and @r.vienna2019 & @stratburnn for welcoming us into their home.

WOM may not have even made it this far without @justinvandommelen, who was the first drummer to rock the stage with me after going solo, and @alexdeloach helping us with admin behind the scenes. Finally, @jacktheunderdog for always being a HUGE support🩷 and introducing us to @ourkidstn, where we’re donating all royalties from Dear Devon.

Now go send this EP to your dad!🥳

One of my biggest songwriting influences. 😔

I remember my dad getting me a guitar magazine back in the day and seeing Glens picture with his old beat up workhorse Takamine guitar for the first time. I always thought it was super cool when you could identify an artist just based on how their guitar looked. So of course I bought one soon after and modified it.

And then per usual you go down the rabbit hole of your new favorite artist. Watching the movie “Once” that he starred in, which was a pretty low budget movie, but there was such a charm to it, and of course, the song he wrote “falling slowly” won an Oscar. Even made my family watch the movie at G Ma’s too lol.

Learned about the band that he was in “the frames” going back to the 90s. His years busking on the streets of Dublin and is why his voice carried the way it did and live shows.

i’m quite happy I was able to see him at the Cannery Row here in Nashville years back. I think it was the release of his rhythm and propose album and he showed us an an Irish tradition of pouring whiskey over the album and handing it to somebody in the crowd. It was pretty cool.

I’m a bit bummed that I won’t be able to see him in Dublin busking on the streets during Christmas like he does every year. even Bono shows up sometimes.

Even little memories like playing rocket league on mute with Jack Rosies and listening to Glen Hansard albums was memorable.

So I suppose cherish your favorite artists while they’re still here. go to a show buy a CD or T-shirt cause you never know when they might be gone.

Thanks for the songs Glen. I’ll keep listening. taken in The Upstate Sound Music Group by @theupstatesound

One of the biggest things I love about this country is the unapologetic pursuit of excellence. It’s probably why the US has innovated and moves mankind forward more than any nation in human history. It’s the entrepreneurial spirit, that love of the journey as the gurus put it. Stemming from the pioneers and frontiersman who journeyed across oceans and unknown lands to make a better life for their families - our forefathers.
Nobody was there to help them. You survived or you died. And a lot did.
I think that’s where the American spirit truly comes from. Defying the impossible when everything around you is at your throat. Of course we’ll stumble, and yes we make mistakes and fall along the way. No one’s perfect, but how else do you expect to learn and grow stronger? Thats why it’s the PURSUIT of excellence. A stoic philosophy our Founding Fathers knew all too well.

So grow stronger, learn, and become more than who you are today. It’s the American way. 🦅

Happy Independence Day America. 🇺🇸 My home.

I have a strong admiration for an Artist who knows how to write a strong Verse 2.

“I started building walls out of the stones they threw at me.
Every time I wanted to tear them down,
You’d show up with the parts I need…”

😮‍💨 You can freaking taste that. The bridge is amazing too.

In true form to the song it made me reflect a bit actually. On what we’re building here, our own Castle in Tennessee 🏰

Trying to stick to a blueprint that’s constantly changing, realizing how long it actually takes to lay foundation, always troubleshooting the electrical and plumbing. 😂

I suppose building a castle is a lot like building a relationship, it does take a lot of work.

But damn is it worth every second. 🏴‍☠️

Congratulation’s to the WOM team.
This one was definitely worth the wait.
