As the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 comes to a close, I am reminded once again of what it means to be an American and how deeply I love this country. I will never forget where I was, what I felt, or the moment I learned that our nation was under attack by al-Qaeda. The shock, fear, heartbreak, and unity of that day are memories that have never left me. Patriotism runs deeply through my family. My family’s roots in America began in New York after my ancestors came from Europe and became American citizens. Both my maternal and paternal grandparents served in the United States military, as did my mother and father. My grandfather was also a New York firefighter. September 11 carries an additional personal sadness for my family, because my grandmother also passed away on this date. Today, in remembrance, I climbed 110 floors β€” the equivalent of the height of the World Trade Center towers β€” to honor the members of the New York City Fire Department who climbed upward while others were trying desperately to escape. They went toward danger to save lives, knowing the enormous risk they faced. My climb could never compare to what they endured that morning, but it was my small way of honoring the firefighters, first responders, service members, families, and every innocent person whose life was taken or forever changed on September 11, 2001. May every innocent soul lost that day rest in peace. Twenty-five years later, we still remember. We still honor them.
