Walking into vet school can feel overwhelming, but opportunities like this remind you that vet med is so much bigger than the classroom. During p.o.w., you’ll tour a variety of hospitals, learn from incredible veterinarians and practice owners, and attend sessions on topics we don’t always talk about enough: business ownership, student loans, finances, imposter syndrome, leadership, and so much more.

Externship Diaries 101: Very thankful for this 5-day experience in Tennessee with Tazewell Pike Animal Clinic 🐾

✨Highlights✨
* Observed and helped with a splenectomy for a large splenic mass, including going into the abdomen and discussing the case and surgical approach.
* Seen a stomach tap (abdominocentesis) and learned proper technique and interpretation.
* Assisted with dental procedures, including tooth extractions.
* Practiced client communication, history taking, and client education.
* Worked with and learned from amazing doctors and techs, making great connections.
* Met a fourth-year vet student on rotation and got insight into clinical year and rotations.
* Built on basic skills like vaccines, venipuncture, and parasite identification under the microscope. by @thevetinterlude

I’m Just A Girl In Vet Med 🥼🎀| 11.24

It’s been a while but 1st year has been a lot! Anywho, I had a time at Southern Equine Center in Aiken,SC! I was able to learn a lot of new skills and apply old skills:

•Learned how to ultrasound tendons & ligaments
•Survived my first horse rectal palpation, lol
•Practiced radiology on real lameness cases + joint issues
•Got hands-on with equine eye exams
•Tested hooves like a pro
•And, successfully did a nasogastric intubation by @thevetinterlude

My name is Camiyah Knox, a first-year veterinary student from Atlanta, GA, and I am humbly vying to be your next SAVMA President-Elect!

My passion for leadership runs deep, rooted in my desire to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, a value that has guided my journey in veterinary medicine. As SAVMA President, I aim to uphold its purpose by empowering and supporting our vet student community to thrive both personally and professionally.

Through the mentorship that has guided me, I’ve learned the true meaning of leadership; understanding the roles within vet med, the steps to get here, and the importance of lifting others along the way. My experiences have taught me assertiveness, confidence, and resilience. Leadership doesn’t just describe me; it defines the growth that has shaped me into the candidate I am today.
