May never planned on running this business. It was her mother’s shop, built from the ground up with long hours, steady hands, and barely enough money to get by. Growing up, May learned to sew by watching her mother work, quietly picking up the skills without realizing it. But she never imagined she’d be the one standing behind the counter one day, running the whole thing. She wanted to paint. That was her escape. That was her dream. Sewing was supposed to be her mother’s thing.

When she moved to the U.S. ten years ago, she thought she was starting fresh. The shop stayed behind in China. She struggled with the language, worked small jobs, and took care of her daughter. Then things changed. The shop needed someone to keep it going, and no one else stepped up. So May did what she’s always done. Kept her head down and figured it out.

Now the shop is hers. She doesn’t speak much English, which makes everything harder. People get impatient, talk down to her, or assume she doesn’t understand anything. She understands more than they think. And she remembers the faces of the ones who don’t come back. Business is inconsistent. Some days there’s a line out the door, and others she sits in silence, wondering if she made the wrong decision taking this on. Sometimes customers argue about prices, not realizing how much time and care she puts into every single stitch. And sometimes, they don’t pay at all.

Still, there are moments that keep her going. A bride tearing up in the mirror. A regular customer bringing in clothes for their entire family. The few minutes at night when she gets to paint, just for herself, just to breathe. The shop is nothing fancy. It’s small, a little worn down, and it’s not what she pictured for her life. But it’s real. And every corner of it holds a piece of her mother, a piece of herself, and a story most people will never ask about. by @thevisionday
