Vagus nerve stimulation stops stress by blocking its source in the brain. Don’t get me wrong—deep breathing and stretching are great, but we’ve all had those moments where we wanted to snap out of it, chill out, and relax, but just couldn’t. It’s because your nervous system is stuck in sympathetic overdrive, keeping you in fight-or-flight mode.

Everyday stressors like work pressure, social media judgements, finances or family arguments can trap you in that sympathetic state. Vagus nerve stimulation turns that off, and nearly instantly shifts your mind and body into a state of peace and calm—helping you deal with the situation with focus, flexibility, and grace.

Share this with anybody who may need the help or head to my website for more info.

"I know what you want me to do. My body just doesn't do it."

That is whole body apraxia, and Dr. Dana Johnson, PhD @drdanajohnson, says it is the most misread thing in autism.

Non-speaking is not the same as not understanding.

She replaced the swings and ball pit in her sensory gym with a squat rack, because intentional movement is what gives her clients control over their own bodies.

And control is what makes everything else possible.

We cover regulation before intervention, why the parent is the most powerful co-regulator in the house, gut health and mitochondrial function, and why you add foods before you take any away.

There are cells in your brain that decide, every single day, whether you're building it up or tearing it down. 🧠

Most people have never heard of them.

Dr. David Perlmutter @davidperlmutter has spent the last five years studying them — and he says they're the thread that connects everything: your blood sugar, your gut, your sleep, your stress, your mitochondria, your risk of Alzheimer's.

He calls them your BRAIN DEFENDERS.

But here's the part that stopped me: they can flip. Friend to foe. And what flips them isn't your genes.

It's your lifestyle.

This conversation with David and JP @thevnsguy went deeper than almost any episode we've recorded — mitochondria as ancient bacteria, why P-tau-217 is really a synapse alarm, why 94% of American adults are quietly setting the stage for this, and the study where people in their 70s didn't just hold steady… they got sharper.

Even the APOE4 carriers. 👀

Your brain's destiny is not written. Come find out why.

Your gut may hold more answers than we ever imagined.

In this episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast, @thevnsguy and I sit down with Dr. Sabine Hazan @dr.sabinehazan , a pioneering gastroenterologist and leading voice in microbiome research, to explore how gut health shapes overall well-being, and why one strain in particular deserves our attention: Bifidobacteria.

We dig into her groundbreaking work in microbiome testing and fecal microbiota transplants, the alarming decline of Bifidobacteria in modern guts, and why personalized, evidence-based care, not one-size-fits-all fixes, is the future of gut health.

Join the movement to protect this vital strain. #SaveTheBif

"I'm a recovering medical gaslighter."

That's how Dr. Efrat Lamandre @drefratlamandre opened one of the liveliest debates with @thevnsguy we've ever had on The Health Upgrade Podcast.

A nurse practitioner with one of the largest NP-owned practices in the country — 20,000+ patients — Dr. E didn't come to bash the system. She came to reframe it.

Her take on medical gaslighting flips the script:
→ Your doctor isn't malicious. They're indoctrinated. They spent a decade learning a curriculum that taught them to distrust anything outside it.

→ Gaslighting takes two people. The moment you hand over your power in the exam room — "sorry to bother you, I'm an easy patient" — you become part of it.

→ Stop expecting one provider to know everything. You don't ask your plumber to fix your wiring. Use your PCP for what they're great at, then build a team.

→ Trust your bodily experience over the data. The pattern recognition you're praised for everywhere else? It counts in medicine too. Don't hand it over at the door.

Her mission isn't anger. It's peace: understand everyone's limitations, work around them, and advocate for yourself like the badass you already are outside that room.

A masterclass in being a better patient — and a better practitioner. 🔥

Your wearable device is telling you something, but are you listening to the right signals? 📈

JP and I sat down with @donmoxley, exercise physiologist and HRV expert, to talk about what your heart rate variability actually reveals about your health, your aging, and your resilience. This one goes deep.

The top five things you'll walk away thinking about:
1. Why your HRV might be the single best window into how fast you're actually aging, and what it means when that number is chronically low 🔍

2. The "four-leaf clover" framework Don uses to understand why two people with the same lifestyle can have completely different HRV scores 🍀

3. How your past — including experiences you may not even label as trauma — could be quietly suppressing your body's ability to recover and adapt

4. The overlooked molecule your body makes during exercise that might explain more about anxiety, resilience, and pain than we've been taught

5. Why movement, sleep, and food are still the foundation — and what role targeted supplementation actually plays on top of that 🧬

Don's been measuring HRV in Olympians, wrestlers, first responders, and everyday people for 35 years. His perspective on what separates thriving from declining is one you'll want to hear.

TSH is NOT a thyroid hormone. 🛑

It's a pituitary hormone — and if that's the only thing your doctor is testing, you're not getting the full picture of what's happening with your thyroid.

In episode 163 of the Health Upgrade Podcast, @thevnsguy and I sat down with Dr. Amie Hornaman @dramiehornaman — thyroid specialist, clinician, and author of the brand new book The Thyroid Fix (out May 12th!) — for one of the most important conversations we've had on thyroid health.

Here's what you'll learn:
🔬 Why T4 medication often isn't enough because T4 is an inactive thyroid hormone. Your body needs to convert it to T3, the active form that actually powers your cells. Stress, insulin resistance, gut dysfunction, and even genetic SNPs can block this conversion entirely — meaning you can be "treated" and still feel terrible.

🧪 The labs your doctor probably isn't ordering — Free T3, Reverse T3, TPO and TGA antibodies. These are the tests that actually reveal what's driving your symptoms. If your doctor won't order them, it's time to find one who will.

⚖️ Why your GLP-1 might not be working — If your thyroid is dysregulated, even the most powerful metabolic medications can fail. Fix the thyroid first, and suddenly everything — weight, blood sugar, energy — starts to move.

Dr. Hornaman's book The Thyroid Fix drops May 12th.

Head to thyroidfixbook.com to pre-order and get access to exclusive bonuses including a live launch event where she'll read your labs in real time.

We recently had an amazing conversation with the brilliant @cynthia_thurlow_ about her new book The Menopause Gut, which is available NOW.

This one is for every woman navigating the hormonal shifts that come with perimenopause and menopause.

Here is what you will take away from this episode:
- How hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause directly reshape your gut microbiome — and why that matters for immunity and long-term health

- The link between gut health and mitochondrial function — and what it means for your energy, metabolism, and how you feel day to day

- Why intermittent fasting and targeted lifestyle changes can be more powerful than medication for managing hormonal transitions

- How to approach personalized testing so you can stop guessing and start addressing the root cause of what you are experiencing

- The gut-brain connection — and how optimizing your microbiome supports cognitive function and healthy aging well beyond menopause

Cynthia's own journey from ER medicine to women's health makes this conversation both deeply personal and incredibly practical.

Exciting new episode alert!

We dive into "The Inflammation Code" with Dr. Shivani Gupta, and her new book of the same name, and discuss where ancient Ayurveda meets modern healing.

You’ll walk away ready to:
- See your fatigue, pain, gut issues, and “stress” as inflammation signals you can actually influence, instead of random symptoms you just have to tolerate.

- Choose food, herbs, and daily rhythms that match your unique constitution, so your routine starts working for you instead of against you.

- Shift from chasing numbers on devices to trusting your body’s cues, using simple Ayurvedic rituals to create lasting resilience.

This episode is perfect for anyone battling chronic inflammation! Tune in now on your favorite podcast platform!

And don’t miss Dr. Shivani’s new book, The Inflammation Code, for a deeper dive into this approach!

Your nervous system may be the connection between digestion, inflammation, stress tolerance, and long-term resilience.

In this episode of the podcast, I am joined by @DrNavazHabib (“The Vagus Nerve Doc”) and JP Errico (@TheVNSGuy) to explore what the vagus nerve is doing behind the scenes—and why it influences everything from gut motility and immune signaling to stress recovery and long-term resilience.

We get into:

🧠 Whether the vagus nerve functions as the brain talking to the body, the body talking to the brain—or a continuous two-way feedback loop
🍽️ How vagal tone influences digestion, nutrient absorption, and gut–brain communication
🔥 Why chronic inflammation can disrupt vagus nerve signaling—and whether prolonged stress can effectively “wear it down” over time
⚡ How acetyl-CoA and choline support vagus nerve function at the cellular and neurochemical level
🛠️ Which tools, technologies, and non-invasive devices can meaningfully support vagal tone—and which ones actually hold up under scientific scrutiny

Dr. Habib breaks down how vagus nerve dysfunction shows up as stress sensitivity, poor digestion, and inflammatory load—while JP brings a deep neuroimmunology and medical-technology lens to how vagus nerve stimulation is being used clinically and therapeutically.

If you’ve been focusing on mindset, supplements, or workouts—but still feel stuck in a state of stress, digestive issues, or low resilience—this conversation connects the dots in a way that’s both practical and actionable.

Comment “VAGUS” and I’ll send you the episode.
