Great day at Dodge Poetry Festival Young Artist’s Day in Newark with a bus full of students today. What a phenomenal event every two years!

We had the chance to hear poets like @_joseolivarez @noelpquinones @sarahbrowningpoet and @tyehimbajess to name just a few. by @thevogelman

Proud of my #aplit students today! Their first attempt at crafting allusions turned out a bit wordy and over-explained, but I love these revisions from the second round. 👏🏻

Let’s remember the power of creating things in AP Lit! It can be a helpful tool when it comes time to notice and analyze literary devices in our reading 📖 by @thevogelman

Have you read Jeff Zentner yet? I read each of his first for novels (YA) and now I’m moving on to his novels for grown ups 😊 They’re all so good!

I’m finally catching up with Colton Gentry’s Third Act before his next book comes out. If this isn’t an author you know, please pick any of his books and start getting to know his work! He’s one of the best writers for character and dialogue out there right now 😊

Fun story: A scene in Colton Gentry features the song “Linger” by The Cranberries. I turned off my car after listening to the scene on Libro.fm, walked into Wawa, and “Linger” was playing on the radio 😆 A serendipitous reader moment on a morning commute to school.

We are always looking for more ways to help our students process feedback and their own writing progress. @thevogelman posted this recently on his Substack, and this teacher adapted it to her class needs. Thank you for generosity in sharing your lessons, Brett!

Do you ever feel like students don’t get to process your comments on their returned essays?

I tried a new technique for handing back papers that processes the editing feedback more deeply…I hope.

After reading all the comments, many of which are about the ideas and style in the paper, students review their editing comments and codes and fill out this BINGO card.

They tape the card to the inside of their notebooks and write a “next time note” of advice to themselves.

This will provide a point of reference for the end of their next writing process ✅

The blank boxes help make editing gaps visible, and the BINGO rows note what academic essay editing skills they have mastered. by @thevogelman

Sometimes formative assessment just means taking time for commendation. Tell students what they are doing well! So often, instructive feedback is corrective.

In small groups, my AP Lit students did a great job on some early annotation work. So while the same groups worked on a second assignment I came around and spotlighted what I enjoyed about their work on this assignment earlier in the week.

No marking time outside of class, just reinforcement of what shines in their work.

Sometimes you meet a student who just loves their color-coded post-its for the summer reading 🤩

And yes, this student is successfully finding references to use in their writing now that class has started 👏 by @thevogelman

Here are the first three examples of Poem of the Day for the year in AP Lit. We’ve done some “Paul Robeson” close reading with an activity from @heymrsbond, a comparison with “truth,” also by Gwendolyn Brooks, and a question flood approach to a new poem by a Philadelphia poet.

It’s going to be a good year 🙂📚 by @thevogelman

Here we go! Year 24 🥳

I won’t meet my students until tomorrow. With grade realignment only Grades 9 and 10 are here today. Still, nice to be back in the building with students around 🙂 by @thevogelman
