Despite everything, there is still joy.

We work in an area where the threat of violence from extremist groups is inescapable. Where food security is increasingly unstable. Where the land is getting exploited because there are no other means of income.

But here, in each of our partner communities, there is joy. Here, their gardens are growing. These are the communities we wake up each day honored to serve.

We partner with rural women in Mali because we believe in them and their ability to shape the future of their families.
It is a privilege to accompany each of these brave communities as they take care of the land that sustains all of us.
Our partnerships don't have deadlines. They are commitments for life. Every community we invest in gains knowledge and means to continue forward. And we will be there to accompany them, enjoying the journey all the way. by @thewashproject

✨Sound on✨

Listen as the women of Bomboya garden turn a worksite into joy while preparing their field.

Yesterday, water came to their garden at last, while singing, dancing and clapping accompanied the sounds of shovels.

A new beginning starts today. by @thewashproject

It has not been easy to do our work safely these days.

But after weeks of navigating unsafe roads and blockades, the last of the necessary equipment arrived in the village of Bomboya.

Hundreds of feet of trenches were dug by the community to lay the plumbing, and today, the water tower that presides over the garden gets its water at last.

These are courageous people we serve, and today, for the first time ever, their garden has water all year long. by @thewashproject

Our Wash Project team has been visiting the women of M’pana garden to hear how their lives have changed in the first year since our partnership.

“My name is Bani Coulibaly.
Before the garden, I worked in foraging, collecting shea nuts to be made into shea butter. I could make about 60 cents per day, or $18 per month.

I would usually spend about four hours looking for water for my family every day.

Thanks to our new garden, I now earn $1.50 per day/$42 per month.

Because we now have clean water in the garden, I can collect clean water there. It takes me a little more than one hour to provide my family’s daily water needs.” by @thewashproject

This garden, home to over 250 women is a source of pride, empowerment and healing. What was once damaged, infertile land has been transformed into a place of abundance.

Before our partnership, the women and girls of this community spent countless hours every day looking for water. Now, they can access clean water right on site from the tap. That means healthier land, fresh food, safe water and economic empowerment for our garden partners.

This is why we do what we do. by @thewashproject

As the gardens in M'pana are getting installed, the community has gathered to contribute their labor to the construction of a small footbridge. While the footings for the bridge get excavated, other members collect rocks which will be incorporated into the support structure for the bridge.

During the rainy season, the dry river bed fills with water, but with no vegetation to absorb the water, it rushes in and out of the community, contributing to erosion and the loss of topsoil essential for growing.

This flooding also makes it difficult for community members to access essentials such as schools, health clinics and markets.

This small footbridge will serve two significant purposes. First, it will provide safe crossing during the rainy season. Secondly, the bridge has been designed to harvest some of the rain that rushes through this stream bed.

The bridge will slow the water enough to allow some of it to go back in the ground, raising the water levels in the nearby wells. It also ensures that the water source we have invested in for their garden will continue to have water for years to come.

When water is taken out of the ground, it must be replaced. That effort requires the support of the entire community. taken in Koulikoro Region by @thewashproject

This is the day that everything changes for the village of M'pana.

After months of discussion and preparation, our 2025 partner garden got to see safe water arrive - right in their own village.

This water will be the heartbeat of their new garden - a source of hope and opportunity for the more than 200 women who live here. It will also save precious time and energy of the girls and women who are responsible for carrying water to their homes every day.

We are honored to be their partner. by @thewashproject

Our focus is to empower rural women through the construction of gardens in partnership with nature. But young people are leaving their villages in search of dangerous jobs or uncertain futures elsewhere. We are all connected.
