D15-25: So close, yet so far to the final destination. The gravel roads feel endless. Bump bump bump bump fishtail. The further south the more biting bugs. Made me want to scream. The weather also got colder. Chilly mornings, full finger gloves, biking in pants (maybe I’m just being dramatic. I’m not good with being cold). @sleepykeags bonked, had a panic attack, snapped a chain, and then was towed up the mountain with a rope hanging from the back of a pickup truck tied to their handlebars. As in my toxic trait when doing physical activity with most people, I was far ahead unaware of the chaos ensuing behind
I really gotta work on this abandonment thing. That night and into the following day was rainy and cold. Nonstop shivering, pathetic whimpering, unable to stop biking without feeling like I would cry. Pathetic really. I even burned the sleeve of my new rain jacket trying to stay warm when cooking ramen on the lil stove. Eventually arrived in Villa O’Higgens, the officially end of the Carretera Austral. From there you have to take the ferry across the lake to Argentina. But the boat is weather dependent
wind dependent
we were stuck for five days. I don’t think the small town life is for me. After eleven years, what felt like a time warp, many groundhog days, one stolen/lost sleeping bag (one liner, one sleeping bag, and a smol blanket were shared for the rest of the trip), we were on the early boat to Argentina! This was my favorite day of the trip. A race against time to make over two borders, up and over a mountain, through fairy forests, “down” an epic mountain bikingesqe single track, and onto another ferry. Spectacular! A gentle last ride into El Chalten, an epic hike to see Fitz Roy and here were are at the end of this adventure. Oh and happy girl because I found many frogs and cats. Until next time! taken in Carretera Austral by @thewildhobbit

D8-14:
More glorious days of adventure and time on wheels. After a dramatic day of rest due to stormy, cold conditions, I reached Coyhaique. A frantic bike rack fix, some yummy food, the purchase of some warmer layers and onto the southern portion of the route. Yikes, do I hate gravel. Pavement has ended. Water run riddled, pothole filled, dusty gravel road begins. Oh and the freaking wind. Lil Nomi is just getting hurtled left and right all over that road. Each day ends with a face totally covered in dust and feeling like I smoked a pack of cigs due to the liters of dirt I breathed in. Played pass/pass back by a man doing the Carretera on one of those hover board things. Ridiculous but cool? Day 12 joined by a new travel companion. A chaotic morning of a snapped chain and stripped crank. The miles have slowed, the distances less. It’s important for me to practice moving slow and respecting the disposition and pace of others. Rolling bumpy hills, turquoise waters, a lost water filter (RIP) and yummy snacks. Only a few days to the end. Fingers crossed for clear weather and quiet winds! taken in Carretera Austral by @thewildhobbit

D4-7: Total solitude. The silence and lack of social obligation by not having service for days is extremely gratifying. I dramatically hitch hiked my way on the ferry from Hornopiren, frantically biking back and forth asking everyone “tienes espacio para mi bici!”. Last minute success and I was on the 6pm ferry. Made some friends on a board. A group of girls hitch hiking the same route I’m riding and a nice Chilean mama who gave me a sandwich. We didn’t dock on the other side until 10:30pm. My brilliant plan is to only pay for accommodation if a need a bed and electricity so to the horror of my new friends I rode off into the darkness to find a place to camp. (See videos). The next few days were absolutely glorious sunshine and spectacular mountains. I even got a little sunburnt. Some side quests recommended by @chestermaam . Just a lil fairy in the woods. I played leapfrog with my hitch hiking friends a few times. It felt quite powerful be on a bike and them in a car (or waiting for a ride) and still be passing. I’ve been feeling a lot of reverence and peace. Fully alone with my thoughts. I have a lot of them. Big feelings, sad feelings, happy feelings, angsty feelings, all the feelings. Up and down mountains. When there’s so many daylight hours in the day and you don’t sleep much past sunrise and your body does well with endurance you cover a lot of miles in a short(er) period of time. Unfortunately, I woke up this morning floating in my tent on my mat. Big rain last night and am currently huddled up inside a cozy hospedaje waiting for literally everything I own to dry as icy cold rain pours down outside. I can see snow on the mountains in the small cloud breaks. Oh and my bike rack snapped a few days ago. It’s currently being held together by duct tape provided by the most curious Dutch man who’s been living on his bike in South America for the last 18 years. We’ll see what the next days bring! Oh and @runtheprocess unclear as to how I was doing multiple 100+ mile days when we crossed paths. by @thewildhobbit

Days 1-3. Bariloche —> Contoa.

Wow. What catharsis. It feels really good to be back on the bike again. Alone. For many hours. D1 was rather anticlimactic. Had to get out of the “city” to the ferry terminal. D2 began an epic journey of ferry hopping, racing from one port to the next, crossing from Argentina into Chile, battling winds and rain, and being freaking cold. A classic Patagonia experience. I felt alive. And then I went calorie deficient, felt sad because that’s what happens to me when I don’t eat enough, and almost bonked. Last ferry ride of the day was a sleepy one. I pedaled hard the last 12 miles into camp to beat the darkness (thank goodness sunset here isn’t until 9pm), got my first — and hopefully last — flat, dramatically fixed it and tucked in alongside the river for sleeps. D3: gravel roads, rolling hills, coastline, audio books, epic views. A happy day. Ate enough, bless. Found blackberries at camp and frantically gobbled so many. GORGEOUS sunset and chats with my German fellow bike packer campsite mate. I feel alive :). taken in Chile by @thewildhobbit

and she’s back. a year hiatus on social media and it’s time for the next adventure. okay, yes the seasonal work and always being somewhere new is an adventure AND right now I am doing something for me. the last four years have been a wild ride. biking the southern tier, mom dying, starting backroads, beginning/ending an intense relationship, Ian passing, and traveling the world. I’m always around people, with people, living in a constant state of stimulation. 2026 is the year of “selfishness”. a year for prioritizing myself and taking care of my needs. I haven’t been alone for a long time. moms death in Oct 2021 to now Feb 2026, feels like a blur. there’s been a lot of big emotions over these last 4.5 years and while I’m grateful for every moment of it, I am now looking forward to some silence. mental, physical and emotional silence. this journey to finding myself began with a solo biking journey across the states and by happenstance I am now beginning a solo journey across Patagonia (at least for the first few weeks), of course via bike. I’m finally starting to feel like me again. and now it’s time for the next chapter to begin. by @thewildhobbit

One month into our Peru journey. A chapter of Lima city time, language school, and good food. Now, back to the creature land. Adventures in the Andes commence. Nomes and Jos back at it. Five days on the Salkantay to Machu Picchu. Despite my resistance to visit MP due to wanting to “be cool” and take the less touristy track, there are no regrets. Epic mountain passes (breathing struggles at 15,000+ feet), little kitties, magical sunsets, the silence and grandeur of nature. (Is my Spanish improving or have I just gaslighted myself into thinking I can communicate and understand well?). Up before the sun, rain clattering at night, grateful for serenity. New friends, so much French. The stairs to Machu Picchu are a bitch. How many times have you been asked if your partner is your sister? Oh, and @erichoien the penny does not fit between the cracks. taken in PERÚ by @thewildhobbit

a window of time before the holidays and winter work, an unexpected bomb cyclone, rain, snow?, epic coastline and redwoods. jos and nomes set off on a brief and cold adventure down the CA and OR coast. definitely not bike packing season. flooded streets and muddy campgrounds. frozen fingers and toes. recognizing that sometimes it’s okay to say “I don’t have to be miserable” and enjoy sleeping indoors. a short but fulfilling time. from meeting @jefferyconner_suddenlink to visiting friend’ family florist shop the stories unfold. learning that maybe biking in warm weather is better

Auckland airport 2:44pm. 3 months of biking. Check. 1.5 months backpacking. Check.

Feeling incredibly grateful for the experiences and companionship I had this winter. 4.5 months of pushing boundaries, learning about people, navigating relationships, biking further, catching sunrises, eating delicious food, laughing, crying, making memories. Thank you all the people who shared their stories and opened their homes to us.

I’ve been lucky to spend so much time with someone who’s inspired me to grow, to ask questions, and to practice doing things other than the “Naomi way.” Feeling very blessed by all the people in my life.

It’s crazy that this journey is coming to an end
thank you to those of you who choose to follow along.

Also, we adopted a small lizard named Dumpling in Wellington. He likes to ride on my handle bars.

4.5 months into the journey. Things learned:

1. A second hand child sized mountain bike will make it across a country and back.
2. Jos loves horses but is also allergic.
3. I’ve developed my mother’s love for potato chips.
4. Jos still hates optimism on uphills.
5. 4.5 months of leg hair growth
thanks for those hairy Ferrell genes

6. There’s no such thing as too many dumplings.
7. The early Māori had pet dinosaurs.
8. The NZ version of U-Hauling is U-Towing #iykyk

Until next time! taken in New Zealand by @thewildhobbit

Happy in Hobbiton. High school Nomes living the dream. The years of not wearing shoes finally paid off

This post goes out to all who’ve supported the ~hobbit~ all these years. You know who you are.

@josiehoien watches LOTR once, forgets all the details but SUPER excited about all the tiny clothes lines.

Oh and if anyone has seen a green cloak, I lost mine in the desert. taken in Hobbiton by @thewildhobbit
