Looking for a wholesome activity this Saturday? The Wimble and Wimbledon BookFest are teaming up for a “silent reading hour” this Saturday from 5-6pm. We’ll be hosting the event at The Fire Station Café on Queen’s Road. The first 30 people to arrive will get a free copy of Elif Shafak’s “The Island of Missing Trees”. The café doesn’t have a huge capacity, so seats are on a first-come, first-served basis, although I suspect people will drop in and drop out. See you there! by @thewimble

‘The Greensleeves are already getting started when I enter the rehearsal room. Neil, my contact in the troupe, greets me immediately with a warm smile. The rest of the group follow suit. In honour of the dancing side’s name, I’ve decided to wear a green roll neck, though Neil assures me that it doesn’t matter what I’m wearing so long as I’m comfortable. “Shall we start with a warm-up dance?” asks Neil.’

With Valentine’s coming up, we’re sharing a little love for our favourite place and its beautiful past ❤️

Before the cafés, rail links and buzzing shops, Wimbledon was a rural village surrounded by fields and commons. Its transformation truly took off in the 19th century, when the arrival of the London and South Western Railway in 1838 shifted the focus of growth from the old village down toward the station, laying the foundations for the town centre we know today.

By the late 1800s, the area had grown rapidly, prompting Wimbledon to become an urban district in 1894 and later recognised as a Municipal Borough of Surrey from 1905 until the creation of the London Borough of Merton in 1965.

Some of the town centre’s most striking historic buildings also date from this period of growth: the Bank Buildings on Wimbledon Hill Road, built in 1885 and still celebrated as one of the most magnificent architectural highlights in the town centre, and the Wimbledon Town Hall, opened in 1931 as a new civic centre before later becoming part of the Centre Court shopping precinct.

It’s Wimbledon Fashion Week! You know what that means… that’s right, it’s time for a fashion show. Check out our recent article with founder of Go Inspire and co-founder of WSFW in this week’s edition of The Wimble. by @thewimble

From next week, you’ll be able to grab a free copy of our first ever print edition just in time for the tennis to roll around.

Copies will be available inside Wimbledon Quarter and The Fire Station Café from mid-week next week and may even arrive at some of your doors in the coming days too.

The Wimble launched a year ago this month, and this milestone would not have been possible without every single one of our loyal readers showing such incredible support. So thank you!
