It's easy to lose a day in Lansing 😃

The @lansingcafeandgeneralstore is a place to gather for breakfast, lunch, coffee, dinner, and live music. Good food, good people, Old World meets Appalachian.

A few doors down, @thewindfallshop is filled with handmade furniture, tools, books, pottery, antiques, and everyday objects made to be used for generations. We also host classes and workshops to help keep traditional craft alive.

They're different businesses built on the same belief. Small towns like Lansing are worth investing in, and spending time in. Things made with care matter. A slower pace still has something to teach us.

If you haven't spent a day in Lansing lately, we'd love to have you. Come wander the streets, eat well, meet good people, and find something you didn't even know you missed.

In our classes and conversations, we talk about "vernacular" craft. Craft from anywhere that was made to suit the need at hand from the material at hand. And the types of craft that people's parents or grandparents did routinely. The grey area between utility and hobby, all full of skill: a grandmother who would make brooms in the winter, or a father who made stick chairs. Appalachian folk are great at this kind of craft!

It can feel a little like it got lost, but I think maybe the social system for it just changed. It's great to see people come in and connect so hard immediately... I don't HAVE to tell you about the craft for you to understand it, at some level. But I hope that it whets your curiosity and that you come back for a class, or a free demo or talk, or just to hang out, talk, and see what's new in the shop.

Hey, it’s Ezra, behind the counter and the workbench at The Windfall. The shop is quickly becoming a great spot to hear voices in craft, and I can't wait to share more of them with you! But, for the moment, I'll introduce myself. Portrait by @visualuprisingphoto

I grew up here in Lansing surrounded by craft and art, and was shown the beauty and importance of time spent making things. Over the years I've worked in wood shops, metal shops, built houses, raised Icelandic sheep and farmed, and worked in arts nonprofits. It all led to The Windfall, wanting to bring unique objects into your home, and to teach skills to engage with wood and craft.

The Windfall is a place for handmade and found goods with stories, from around here and a few from far away that feel like here. My hope is to honor good work, and send people out the door carrying something meant to be used and loved.

This fall I’m learning how to balance the bench with the bell on the door, and I’d love your help: tell me an object you've had, something a loved one used to make, or something you'd like to learn to make now?

Appalachia builds the world's finest ladderback chairs, not because they're ornate, not because they're exotic. Because they're built from split native wood that follows the grain, shaped with simple hand tools, assembled with careful joinery, and rooted in generations of Appalachian knowledge, form, function, and editing.

There's something about this place.

Occasionally, I struggle with how to present the shop, and Lansing as a whole. There's a sum of the pieces that you can feel in this community, and on a full Saturday, that surpasses any single event or place. Something very special, but difficult to show you until you see it!

Earlier this year, @makphotoportraits @visualuprisingphoto and @enowenphotography started @fieldlinesstudio where they have regular photo walks and are setting up studio space/darkroom. Workshops as well, cyanotypes and tintypes and more to come. I've been really excited to see them taking off, it's such a unique and exciting thing on offer here.

Anyway, Joe and I have been talking and experimenting, trying to find ways to tell the story of the Windfall Shop, and really, Lansing itself. These are our first attempts. I hope they'll become an honest record of the people, work, and character of this little town.

Keep an eye out. Joe's just getting started, and I think you're going to enjoy what he sees. 💪

We can learn so much from a stool!

The staked stool is one of the most useful pieces of vernacular furniture. Over two afternoons you'll learn the fundamentals of grain, compound-angle joinery, shaping with hand tools, and building strong, elegant furniture that has been part of everyday life for centuries.

Every student leaves with a finished stool and the knowledge to build another at home with minimal tools.

Fly Around Fest folks! 🎻🎻🎻

In the morning before the music starts, stop by the Windfall Shop downtown to learn the anatomy and nuances of fiddles. The class is free, but we do appreciate you pre-registering for the class (link in bio) if possible.

Our instructor, Dick Wilson, is a High Country musician, luthier and instrument repairman based in Lansing. At his store Friends Music in Boone, he spent decades working with instruments and musicians across the region, including playing alongside Doc Watson and his somewhat adopter, Ola Belle Reed herself. His teaching is rooted in lived experience. Bench work, jam circles, and a deep respect for Appalachian music traditions. Almost no one could be more central to the true heart of @flyaroundfest

Now for the meta bit: the fiddle in this graphic is one of Dick's builds, photo provided by the one and only Trevor McKenzie @tallesthemlock who plays one of them. The music for this post is an Ola Belle song played by Tim O'Brien, who toured and recorded with a fiddle built by Dick for years. There we go!

Today on the Substack 📝

We talk about our culture, identity. Something disappearing, or lost, that we remember with affection. It's ours to love, leave, or save. We assign a lot of that to objects, the things we use every day while we're living those lives. I grew up in the middle of those things, and the people making them, and it's become so essential for my understanding of how to LIVE and interact with people and the world around me. Do you have objects like that? What are they, do you know who made them? What does it mean for them to be from a specific place, and specific people?

One year ago I opened the doors at the Windfall Shop.

Since then, every Saturday, I've watched people come in and be reminded of things their parents made or owned. Or see a piece and pick it up, look closer, and be amazed by the craft. Or how beautiful and simple, or how thin, or light, or colorful, or smooth, or soft, or clever...

I've also watched you mesmerized by wood turning demos, intrigued by grain lectures.

As I've said before, the hand-tool revival isn't just nostalgia. It's a correction. I believe in this, and I am so honored to give you a space to believe it, too.

Saturday, July 4th, everything shopwide is 10% off. There'll be a few other fun specials going on, come on down!

250! 🇺🇸

I'm a little late with this one, but there's a lot going on! Smash burgers at @lansingcafeandgeneralstore and @blue_ghost_market soft opening and Pie on the Mountain having their long-awaited reopening!
