We are excited to celebrate a major milestone for the East New York Community Land Trust (ENYCLT) and the East New York community!

ENYCLT recently purchased a 9,500-square-foot building at 161 Jamaica Avenue that will become the East Brooklyn Liberation Center a permanently community-controlled space for organizing, cultural organizations, local businesses, worker cooperatives, and other community uses.

The $2.3 million acquisition marks an important milestone for New York City!!!!!!

The Working World was proud to support this acquisition alongside New Economy Project, providing mission-aligned financing that helped ENYCLT move quickly to secure the property.

For us, this is what community wealth building can look like in practice: putting capital behind communities working to take land and economic resources out of the speculative market and place them under permanent democratic and community control.

As ENYCLT President Boris Santos shared in the recent article, the goal isn't simply creating more space, it's creating a place rooted in community:

“I don’t believe in creating housing. I believe in creating homes.”

We are proud to have played a role alongside the many organizations, funders, organizers, and community members who made this possible.

Congratulations @eastnewyorkclt East New York Community Land Trust on this historic achievement. We can’t wait to see the East Brooklyn Liberation Center grow into a home for organizing, cooperative economics, and community power. ✊🏾🏘️

📰 Read more about ENYCLT’s work and the acquisition in the recent City Reporter feature — link in bio.

@donnacocktailclub IS FULLY WORKER-OWNED! 🎉

We are excited to celebrate a major milestone for Donna Cocktail Club:

Donna has been proudly worker-owned, and today we are celebrating the team reaching 100% worker ownership. ✨

This moment represents more than a change in ownership. It means the people who make Donna what it is every day now have a direct stake in its future.

Through their transition to worker ownership, Donna’s team has built a workplace where workers share in the ownership, decision-making, responsibility, and success of the business.

Donna has long been a special place built around great cocktails, hospitality, and bringing people together. Now, its next chapter belongs to the workers who help create that experience.

At The Working World (TWW), we are proud to have supported Donna on its journey and to celebrate this incredible achievement alongside the team.

🥂 Here’s to Donna, a business owned by the people who make it possible.

Congratulations, Donna! 🎊

This semester, The Working World had the opportunity to serve as a client for NYU Stern’s Capstone Program, collaborating with several groups of students on projects connected to cooperative ownership, succession planning, hospitality sector growth, and due diligence for potential worker-owned conversions.

The students brought thoughtful analysis, creativity, and real dedication to the work. From researching what makes businesses strong candidates for worker ownership to building financial models and outreach recommendations, their projects helped explore how cooperative economics can continue to grow in NYC and beyond.

What stood out most was seeing students engage deeply with the idea that businesses can be structured differently, prioritizing workers, community, and long-term sustainability alongside financial success.

A huge thank you to the NYU Stern students and faculty for the collaboration, energy, and care they brought to these projects. The future of this work gets stronger when more people can imagine and help build democratic workplaces ✊🏿

Congrats for completing their capstone projects 🎊 👏🏿 💐 🥳

BIG NEWS!!!!!!!

We are excited to share that The Working World  and NYC NOWC have been selected by the NY Small Business Funders Collective to continue supporting our Equity in Public Procurement program. 🎉

Through this program, we help worker cooperatives better understand and navigate New York City’s procurement systems from PASSPORT and PIP registration to identifying and pursuing contract opportunities.

Over the past year, we deepened relationships with City Council members, City agencies, and procurement officials to expand education around the benefits of contracting with worker cooperatives. Through this work, we helped advance conversations and educational efforts that support greater accessibility in New York City’s contracting systems.

Public procurement should be accessible to all businesses, including worker-owned cooperatives rooted in the communities they serve. We are proud to continue building pathways for co-ops to access opportunities, grow sustainably, and keep wealth in the hands of workers and communities.

Thank you to our courageous worker-owned cooperatives, our ecosystem partners, NYC NOWC, SBS, the NY Small Business Funders Collective, and everyone helping make this work possible.

Monthly Co-op Highlight: Sea & Soil 🥪

This month we are showing love to our neighbors at Sea & Soil, a worker-owned sandwich shop & catering team located at 📍388 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn.

From selling $5 sandwiches at park pop-ups… to opening their first brick & mortar in 2023, their journey is powered by community, patience, and collective ownership!

“Being a worker-owner means a level of autonomy and responsibility that I otherwise would not have… I feel pride and joy and a commitment I have not felt in any other job.” — Sea & Soil worker-owner

Almost Everything on their menu is made in-house, and you can taste the difference. Customers rave about the quality. The fresh, locally sourced ingredients, house-baked naturally leavened bread, and simple, thoughtful, healthy food is done right. They are proving that you can serve amazing food while keeping profits in the hands of the people doing the work. They also offer a sliding scale pay model, making their food more accessible while staying true to their values ✊🏽

From the very beginning the TWW team loved working with them through every step of our process. Did We mention they are our neighbors, being in the same building, and having them cater some of our events is a plus. Its good to know they feel the same way!

“TWW loan has helped us grow and expand sustainably, we would not be able to do what we are doing right now without the loan!” — Sea & Soil worker-owner

Since opening, they have been surpassing their sales goals, building momentum, creating jobs, and bringing fresh, high-quality food to Atlantic Ave. We are excited to see their continued growth and success

💡 Advice from Sea & Soil:
“Being a part of a worker-owned cooperative takes patience. Be kind, communicate clearly, and you will build amazing bonds with your comrades.”

Something special is opening soon 👀🌱

We are excited to share that Sea & Soil Co-op will be opening their new location in just a few weeks at 388 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn.

Sea & Soil is a worker-owned sandwich shop built on a simple but powerful idea:

👉 the people doing the work should share in the ownership

From house-baked, naturally leavened bread to globally inspired ingredients made in-house, the are creating food that is thoughtful, accessible, and rooted in community, including a sliding scale model to make sure more people can enjoy it.

As their lender, we were proud to support their expansion into a larger space and the growth of their team. This is what non-extractive finance looks like in action, helping businesses grow while keeping ownership in the hands of workers.

✨ This is more than a sandwich shop. It’s a model for how business can be done differently.

👉 Follow @sea.soil.coop for opening updates

And if you’ve ever thought about:
 • Growing your business
 • Transitioning to worker ownership
 • Or accessing non-extractive financing

We would love to connect. DM us
