Graham and I will soon celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, which got me thinking… this time 20 years ago, my Celebrant journey was just beginning.

I didn’t know at the time where it might lead … but the idea sparked in my brain as I was writing our ceremony.

Our lovely Celebrant had provided us with resources to look through, but I soon realised there were things we wanted to say that were more personal and specific to us.

So, I started to write. Bespoke material, from the heart. It touched on family, and role models, and what marriage means to us. It was meaningful and lighthearted, without being too long.

Graham and I were happy with the overall flow, and when I sent the script to our Celebrant, she commented that it would be “the most beautiful ceremony she’d have done to date”.

Her feedback meant the world to me, and I knew I wanted to become a Celebrant, and create unique ceremonies for other couples.

One morning as I was flicking through the paper between waves of morning sickness, I spotted an ad for a Celebrant course. Within the hour I had signed up, and began the study modules.

I remember submitting my final course video just days before giving birth to our first child. It was a “mock ceremony”, with my family standing in as the couple, witnesses, and videographer; me with my celebrant notes resting on my pregnant belly, and my cat wandering through the foreground of the shot. It was hard not to laugh at the silliness of the situation, but I successfully passed, and my registration as an Authorised Marriage Celebrant came through in February 2009. That germ of an idea had become a real life thing… a career and a business that I love to this day.

I have continued to fine-tune the way I work over the intervening years, but the essence of what I do is essentially the same. Creating personal, heartfelt, fun and engaging ceremonies that people enjoy remembering for years to come.

It was such a thrill to be part of Georgia and Michael’s heartfelt wedding at Smoked Garage, Fortitude Valley - a unique venue with amazing natural light and a cool urban vibe.

It was extra special to work with photographer Shaun from @withonemustardseed - just two weeks shy of a DECADE since our first wedding together!! It was fun reaching back into our memories for the names of the couples we have worked with together. And here we are, a little older and a lot wiser 😂, and still dedicated to this wedding industry we love.

I can’t wait to see Shaun’s images of this beautiful wedding.
