Four years ago today, I was brought back to life.

If you’ve ever been dismissed by a doctor, if you’ve ever wondered if the fight was worth fighting, I’m here to tell you not to give up.

It took me a lifetime, 35 years, to diagnose myself with #mals and now I’m praying medicine, speaking at medical conferences, and touring with my book The Secular Prayers of Medicine: Stories from the Frontlines.

I can’t begin to describe what this journey has been like but I am eternally grateful to my surgical team, the MALS PALS Facebook group, and my community of family, friends, and Zebras.

If I had to sum up my medical practice and life philosophy it would be simple:

1. Do not harm and take no shit.
2. Hope is alive for as long as you are.
3. When hypotheticals happen, we always deserve dignity.

It’s time for you to see what I’ve been writing these last few years and it’s time for us to band together.

I was once just a girl but now I’m fighting for the rights of my fellow dismissed patients, the medically fragile, and the undiagnosed but hopeful souls still walking their path of the road to wellness.

The American Healthcare system is chock full of missed diagnoses and when doctors dismiss patients, or worse assign misdiagnoses, monsters are made.

“The Secular Prayers of Medicine: Stories from the Frontlines” shines a light on the link between monsters, medicine, and chronic pain to remind us we are all only a diagnosis away from our own horror story. When you’re diagnosed with a mistake, you become a monster but even monsters pray for release.

Born with a cardiac deformity and misdiagnosed throughout her lifetime, I slipped into the world of the Invisible Ill and danced with death multiple times but was consistently dismissed as a “dramatic” patient. Ten years into my medical career a car accident plunged me into a medical nightmare even as I sought to alleviate the discomfort of my patients.

This book opens a door into a world of secular prayers that can only be seen through the eyes of a clinician who speaks the language of loss. Sourced from my career in oncology, primary care, and emergency medicine, these tales are juxtaposed with my journey to diagnostic deliverance and a dose of American medical history for context.

Spooky stress baking.

That’s where I’ve been.

We’re still accepting secular prayers for my family and their ongoing health journey, and appreciate and and all well wishes, happy thoughts, and good vibes as I roll into the autumn armed with flour, butter, and far too much sugar.

All kidding aside though this book by @practicalpeculiarities is the best cookbook I’ve ever bought.

Call for Secular Prayers:

When you send secular prayers, you’re offering compassion without creed, caring for others how they wish to be cared for during their time of need.

Originally developed in 2019 as a reflex for wanting to offer comfort to my patients, it’s expanded into a global call for compassion.

Can you think of any examples of secular prayers?

Hold your breath…and breathe.

I was counting the heartbeats while I held my breath.

I was fighting back tears as I watched the duplex flow red and blue, red and blue, indicating the healthy flow of blood through my heart.

It’s my heartbeat I was waiting on.

The tears weren’t those of joy, but of rather desperately fighting against a flashback from my last echo. We don’t talk enough about medical PTSD and while I spend the majority of my time caring for my patient panel, I am still my own original patient.

I got into medicine to diagnose myself.

I’m staying in it to help others.

So do the test you’ve been putting off, get your screenings, just don’t forget to stop holding your breath on the life you have left and breathe.

Breathe through the tears.

It’ll all be OK in the end.

Hope is a fickle thing and over the last fifteen years of my medical practice, I’ve found that’s it’s a crucial part of human survival. To keep the flicker of hope alive, is to keep oneself alive.

Asthmatics unite inside today!

As the smoke from the #canadianwildfires cross into New England we’ve got an air quality and heat advisory that is recommending we all stay indoors and well hydrated.

When I lived in Utah, we were no stranger to wildfires but to see this smog in my hometown it just hits different.

Make sure you have your inhalers and check in on your neighbors.
