When he asked to date me the first time I was afraid of what the future held. We had many differences. I didn’t know where I wanted to practice after I finished medical school. I wanted to move far away. He wanted to stay in New Jersey. I was 2 years older. He’s hispanic and I’m South Asian. He was patient and calm but I was stubborn and impulsive. I thought we could never end up together due to completely different cultures. I thought my parents would blatantly refuse to accept him. I often questioned whether I even belonged in his family as well.

Over the years we struggled with our own doubts around ourselves and our families. We constantly re-discovered who we were whilst battling stress, depression, anxiety and fear. We eventually evolved together as adults and doctors in the real world. We became better people together because one thing always stayed constant- we couldn’t stay away from each other. No matter how far apart we were, we thought about each other’s wellbeing and provided emotional support. We were each other’s rock. We made each other laugh. We cried in each other’s arms. We balanced each other’s emotions so well. He taught me discipline and to invest time and effort into the right people. I taught him to see the beauty in life, and to be kinder.

In the end, when we had genuine integrity and great intentions, our families saw no problem seeing through our differences in culture and upbringing. My father saw a sweet but strong willed man who will go to great lengths to protect and love his daughter. My mother saw a handsome, respectable man who is loving and thoughtful (and also willing to learn Islamic teachings lol). His family embraced me like their own from the very start. Thus… our families merged and we’ve embraced both Bangladeshi and Salvadorian roots. I’ll continue eating Pupusas 🫓 & he’ll eat Biryani & Halal Chicken over Rice 😂. I’ll dance to Spanish and Bachata music while he’ll listen to Bollywood songs (PS he’s a big fan of SRK). The rest is history…

Best concert of my life! …And to think I almost didn’t even go. It took us all Millennials back to our childhood, when we grew up singing and dancing to these songs. These were the good times
