"More than 200,000 children—most of them American citizens—have been separated from their parents, and many have been left behind with temporary caregivers. Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Caitlin Dickerson’s latest investigation for The Atlantic, 'The Babies Left Behind in America,' documents the policy changes that have allowed ICE to prioritize deportation quotas over child welfare."

In this interview from @kqed, Caitlyn Dickerson and Kelly Albinak Kribs speak on the hidden toll of this domestic separation crisis and what it means for families across the country.

"I'm really proud of the advocate community that I'm apart of, in ways in which we are doing everything we can to meet this moment and center the best interests of children, and make sure that they are not the ones baring the consequences of immigration enforcement decision. It's just completely unjust, to strip a child of their primary caregiver, their parent, their loved ones just to enforce a policy. We're continuing to hold the line and will continue to do so as long as necessary!" - Kelly Albinak Kribs, The Young Center's Co-Director of Technical Assistance Program

In collaboration with @theyoungcenter, we’re continuing to demand transparency from the government regarding protections for parents in ICE custody and the need to comply with the Detained Parents Directive.

Increased immigration enforcement is leading to the detention and deportation of more parents—separating families and harming children. Parents in ICE custody have been denied the right to make decisions about where and how their children will be cared for.

The government should not be detaining parents and caregivers in the first place. But when parents are detained, they must be able to make care arrangements for their children.

Children deserve safe, stable placements—and the ability to stay connected to their parents. They should not be left with strangers or separated from their families without a way to maintain contact.

We call on the federal government to ensure that ICE detention centers comply with the Detained Parents Directive and take steps to reduce family separation.

Families deserve to stay together.

Parents deserve a voice in their children’s care.

"ICE arrested more than twice as many children during the first half of 2026 compared to the same time period the previous year. Starting with Trump’s return to office, child arrests climbed steadily through July, the latest full month with available data. That month, more than 1,100 children were arrested."

The increasing number of immigrant children being detained is more than alarming.

Our children deserve to live in a place where they feel safe, protected, and where their voices are heard.

Parents have rights—even when they are detained.

The federal government is failing to comply with the Detained Parents Directive, which protects the ability of detained parents and caregivers to make care and custody decisions and plans for their minor children.

When parents are detained, families can already face immense uncertainty and disruption. Denying parents the ability to make plans for their children can deepen that instability, prolong family separation, and make it harder for families to maintain meaningful connections.

At the Center for Family Representation (CFR), we believe families belong together. That means protecting parents’ rights, supporting children, and challenging systems that create unnecessary family separation.

Together with @theyoungcenter, we’re highlighting how family separation continues when the government fails to comply with the Detained Parents Directive.

The number of children stripped away from their parent(s) should not be on the rise. But unfortunately, this is the reality of thousands of children right now.

A mother should be able to stay with her baby and not forcibly separated.

Children deserve to be within the safety and stability of their own families and communities. by @theyoungcenter
