As I’ve been digging back into my work with @theyouthwillbeallwrite, I’ve been very intentional about finding restorative reads that challenge me and reframe how I view justice and what I *think* I know about reform.

This week’s reads (and watches) reminded me that reform starts with recognition. Recognition that these kids, are still kids 🧡

If we’re serious about reform, we have to be willing to unlearn and de-stigmatize.

As an avid reader, I believe in the power of words and equipping ourselves with the knowledge that well crafted literature can provide us with. The overrepresentation of youth of color in the juvenile justice system is a significant issue that has drawn attention from researchers, policymakers, and advocates alike. Numerous studies and reports have consistently shown that African American, Latino, and Native American youth are more likely to come into contact with the justice system compared to their white counterparts.

This disparity is often attributed to various factors, including systemic racism, socioeconomic inequalities, biased policing practices, and racial profiling. Research indicates that these youth may be more likely to experience harsher treatment by law enforcement, leading to higher rates of detention, adjudication, and placement in correctional facilities.

We must address these issues, engage in informative conversations about these deeply rooted discriminatory practices, and rally for change! 🧡 by @mstrinitysimone

Come ship off some notebooks with me for @theyouthwillbeallwrite 🧡📓🫶🏽📦🛩️

I started the morning out by calling a few juvenile detention centers in Arkansas, and although I was met with some dial tones, voicemail systems, and no answers, I was able to get through to a couple juvenile detentions centers who were open and willing to accept a donation of notebooks!

Today, we shipped off to:

Washington County Juvenile Detention Center

AND

Benton County Juvenile Detention Center

A sad and unfortunate reality that has become normalized in today’s society. We shuttle our children into the public school system, just to watch them be fast tracked to prison - where wearing a uniform and walking in a straight line takes on a different meaning; a darker meaning.
