Finding your style as a disabled person, especially after a traumatic event can be really difficult and overwhelming, especially in a body that you’ve felt has betrayed you and is changing all while you’re navigating basically a whole new life.

I’ve struggled a lot over the (almost) five years in my wheelchair and it took me awhile to find out what clothing both felt good to me and looked good in my wheelchair. It’s something I still get frustrated by. Sometimes I find a really cute pair of pants that I want, but they’re too short for me sitting in my chair or they don’t work with my AFO’s.

I struggled a lot being perceived and existing in my body after what happened and me from 2021 would be soooo shocked to see what we’re wearing now. There was a time I gave away all my crop tops and now they’re something I always recommend for wheelchair users (fun fact: crop tops can even be a work accommodation).

If you’re navigating a new life with a disability or you’ve been disabled for a long period of time and trying to find what your style is, it’s okay to experiment! Look into different aesthetics, moodboards, adaptive clothing, borrow clothing from friends or family, look at what other disabled people are wearing or even start by maybe adding a headband or a necklace to something you’re already wearing!

Fashion is so unique to the individual, that no one can take it away. 🩷

I’ve been left out, discriminated against, underestimated, overlooked, bullied, told I don’t belong. I’ve crawled up and down a million stairs just to get to class and there have been more times I’ve wanted to give up than keep going. Sometimes, the biggest battle is showing up knowing I’m going to be the only wheelchair user in the room and even if I don’t always know why I keep showing up, I’ve never regretted it. ♿️✌🏾
