Bridge Theatre does consistently excellent work (I’ve seen multiple past productions of theirs multiple times, and their recent Midsummer is my favorite ever production of any Shakespeare comedy!), but this one, a modern version of the Ibsen story completely rewritten and directed by Simon Stone @simonandrewstone took my breath away.

The leads are extraordinary, as you’d expect, but the entire group of actors, including young newcomers, are absolutely pitch perfect. I leapt to my feet, and a lot of you know that I usually (almost obstinately sometimes) don’t like to do that. I feel a standing ovation *really* needs to be earned. This one was.

Gosh, it was stunning. Get there if you can.

I have seen multiple productions of this play… But I had to see this one… Most people are here for Samira Wiley… And she’s a powerhouse performer! But I am here for FAITH OMOLE, who was the most brilliantly fulfilled, three-dimensional, heartbreaking Regan I have ever seen when she was in the genius production of LEAR at the Almeida last year… anyway. Here we go!

I am SO grateful I got to see this wonderful play before it closes Saturday!

I must admit I was a bit worried, because as much as I adore the work of these fine humans, the last live production by David Ireland that I saw was Cyprus Avenue, with Stephen Rea …

and that, though undeniably brilliant, left me disturbed for days after - profoundly
(truly, it *still* disturbs me, years later, just thinking about it right now)

But this? It’s also provocative and even violent, but also incredibly touching and wildly funny - my earlier experience will continue to haunt, but The Fifth Step will continue to inspire!

Beautifully written, directed, acted, designed.
Pure theatre delight!
