Earlier this month I was reminded of how in the late 90s at Tower Records they would have midnight performances for the release of new albums. My dorm was about 1/4 mile from the Tower Records at Mass Ave & Newbury Street (the one that was an actual tower AND it was rumored that maybe Steven Tyler lived upstairs?), so it was nothing to just walk down there and stand in line for the show. Tanya Donelly’s “Lovesongs for Underdogs” came out when I was a freshman in college, so OF COURSE I had to be there! Please note flippy hair, little jacket that had a Vespa patch I sewed to the chest, and tiny army bag—everything I owned at that time was tiny, I dunno. My only regret is that you can’t see the DOLL HEAD ON A STICK that I handcrafted in my dorm room and presented to Tanya Donelly, sort of a pretty magic wand talisman or something (art!!). // edited to add that I looked it up and this was the first WEEK of freshman year—welcome to Boston, baby thimblewinder! by @thimblewinder

I’m unexpectedly home (everything is ok now! mom broke her wrist and had surgery, she is doing well) at the time of year when New England is most, I dunno, picturesque? I’d say “enchanting” knowing every other New Englander will make fun of me, but SORRY GUYS IT IS TRUE, JUST LOOK AT THOSE TALL GRASSES IN THE WATERSHED AREA, YOU KNOW YOU LOVE THEM. Do you like zines? I’ll be at the @sfzinefest (NEW LOCATION!! Now at 1 Jones St) this Sunday, September 6th, do stop by! I’ll be at table A57-58 (in the main room) with my buddies @frequenzine and @theblackandthered from 11-5. What can you find at my table? It’s a collection of perzines with a twist—I’ve been making fun zines since the 90s (yes!) and my current work includes zines about art making, the Kewpie Mayonnaise museum, and remembering art I made as a kid. I also have some fun ephemera with stickers, a new zine tools block print (not pictured), and some little notepads I’m debuting at this event. Hope to see you there!! I made a zine about participating in the virtual tour of Kewpie Mayo’s MAYOTERRACE museum earlier this summer, so of course I mailed them a copy… and they sent me an incredible care package! Including the coveted (by everyone in the tour chat) NOTEPAD! Did not expect to become a mayonnaise influencer in 2026 but I’ll take it 😎 by @thimblewinder

At the end of May I got to go on a virtual tour of the Kewpie Mayonnaise MAYOTERRACE museum live from Tokyo and of course I made a zine about it! No trade secrets are revealed, but I did draw our hosts from @kewpie_global @kewpieusa and used egg yolks for the letter O wherever possible. Printed at @reprographix.ink using red and sunflower ink with the random cheap paper (IYKYK riso on bond paper is TOO good). This went out to my Patr30n subscribers for June! by @thimblewinder

Can this quilt top my Grandma Nellie made in the 60s or 70s become a quilt again? Today I’m taking it for a consultation to find out. It was once a quilt with a disintegrating backing and an old acrylic mid layer; I took it apart to replace the guts and backing, thinking I’d hand stitch it, but that was (as I discovered early on in the process) much too slow. I’ve secured the loose seams and today I’ll see if my local quilt service will sew it into a sandwich for me! I have a new lightweight cotton batting and an extra-wide quilting cotton to add, but it’s made from a lot of different (and old) fabrics, so we’ll see what they think. Recently had the chance to work on this illustration commission, a portrait of Yuzu in her window. Lots and lots of little bits of paper! New methods for getting everything exactly in place! The final piece is 5x7 inches and incorporates scraps new and old from my paper collection. by @thimblewinder
