AIX Cycle 2 Part 1F

Ink and tempera paint stick on paper

As this is the sixth and final piece created in these colours within the same session, I felt an even greater urge than with Part 1E to push against the boundaries of the project and make a piece that felt especially honest and free. Something about the way the ink layer went down was really pleasing to me, so much so that I forgot entirely to add any graphite, moving straight on to the blue. I really loved the way the black and blue "structures" interacted on the page and I had the feeling that the piece was finished after adding the blue elements - but I carried out my plan to include some of the pink anyway. At the time it almost made me feel sad to add the pink, as if I were chipping away at a finished sculpture, potentially ruining it. But I know that the pink must be there, and I'm satisfied that it's inclusion ties this piece into the overall project as intended.

AIX Cycle 2 Part 1E

Ink, graphite, tempera paint stick on paper

A big part of the AIX Cycle project is about how I "react" to previous pieces and how this reaction is brought out in the subsequent pieces I make. In this second wave of the experiment I am making 6 pieces with the same colour combination, which is double the size of same-colour sets in AIX Cycle 1. As this is the 5th sheet created with these colours in the same session, I feel my reaction to the first 4 pull my intuition in a different way to what I experienced when only making 3 in each set. I feel my mind drawn to create something "different", more experimental, more distinct than the others. I really enjoy the result!

AIX Cycle 2 Part 1C

Ink, graphite, tempera paint stick on paper

One of my goals with this second iteration of AIX Cycle is to generate a sense of depth. I make each layer in a specific order to achieve this (with the occasional exception - rules are made to be ignored sometimes). Applying the different mediums in the right order is also important due to the way they interact on the page. I really like the sense of layering in this piece and I think it achieves some of the sense of depth I'm hoping for. The thick black on top of the colours on top of the under-marks.
