🚨 Some of the Most Important Medications Used in Critical Care🚨

When a patient’s condition becomes critical, every second counts. These are some of the medications commonly used in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and emergency settings to help stabilize patients during life-threatening situations.

💉Epinephrine– Used in cardiac arrest and severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
❤️ Atropine– Helps treat severe bradycardia (dangerously slow heart rate).
📈 Dopamine– Supports blood pressure and circulation in certain shock states.
🫀Norepinephrine– One of the most commonly used medications for severe hypotension and septic shock.
💧Furosemide– Helps remove excess fluid in conditions such as pulmonary edema and fluid overload.
🧠 Diazepam– Used to control seizures and status epilepticus.
🫁 Hydrocortisone– Can be used in severe allergic reactions and adrenal insufficiency.
⚡Amiodarone– Helps manage certain life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
👶Magnesium Sulfate– Commonly used in eclampsia and specific cardiac rhythm disturbances such as Torsades de Pointes.

📚 Healthcare is constantly evolving, and medication use should always be guided by qualified medical professionals based on each patient’s condition.

💾 Save this post for future reference and share it with a healthcare colleague who loves learning.

Not every emergency is loud… some are silent but deadly.

A 54-year-old patient walks into the ER with hypotension, muffled heart sounds, and jugular venous distension.

Do you recognize the pattern?

This is where clinical thinking makes all the difference. 🧠✨
If you know… you know.

Metronidazole inhibits CYP450 enzymes (especially CYP2C9), which are responsible for metabolizing warfarin.

This leads to:
• ⬆️ Increased warfarin levels
• ⬆️ Elevated INR
• ⚠️ Higher risk of bleeding

Clinical Tip
Always monitor INR closely when starting antibiotics in patients on warfarin. by @thinklikern

Not all veins are equal for venipuncture.

Knowing the correct order can reduce complications and improve success rates.

For most patients, the median cubital vein is the first choice due to its stability and lower risk of complications.

In elderly patients, when AC veins are fragile or difficult to access, the dorsal hand veins may be a more suitable alternative.

Save this for your next shift. 💉👩‍⚕️ by @thinklikern
