Costco has thousands of hourly workers with million-dollar 401ks. Tony’s story gets even better.

He’s spent 40 years at Costco, and now he mentors newer employees. Polanyi called this tacit knowledge: we can know more than we can tell.

You see it, you practice it, you experience it. Who do you learn alongside at work?

When it comes to AI and the future of work, the key may be soft skills.

Taste, judgment, discernment, storytelling, meaning-making, delegation.

Everyone talks about it, but no one really knows or shows how to do so, especially if you’re already in the workplace.

These skills are more important because in the age of AI, cognitive or analytical intelligence, which is what you know and how much you know, has been commoditized. It’s cheap, it’s quick, and it’s accessible. So now it’s more about how one applies that knowledge, whether it be for work, learning, or life.

I don’t have the answers. I’m on that journey myself of reclaiming some of these soft skills that were quite frankly beaten out of me because it isn’t what we valued.

But I think it’s our turn to rebrand soft skills. Not that soft is bad, but I’d rather we name it than let the tech bros rebrand it. #futureofwork #aiskills #taste by @thinkwithv

What are the skills we need in the age of AI?
Share this with someone who might need it or save it for yourself.

Everyone says taste, wisdom, and judgment—but how do we get them?

Focus on four groups of skills that sit underneath those qualities:

PAUSE = Groundedness + Focus
We live with distraction and constant pressure to do more. Practice grounding yourself, making room for rest and negative space, and returning your attention when things get frenetic.

NOTICE = Metacognition + Self-Knowledge
Understand how you think and catch assumptions and knowledge gaps. Self-knowledge gives you orientation: your values, goals, purpose, and where you are now. Without that, you can optimize yourself into oblivion.

CHANGE = Learn + Unlearn
Stay curious enough to learn and humble enough to unlearn. Changing your mind can mean feeling like a beginner again. Sometimes it's a big ego death. That discomfort is part of the practice.

ACT = Agency
Take initiative without waiting for permission, and have the tenacity to persist. Never give up.

Then run the loop again.

Which part are you practicing?

Everyone says we need taste and judgment in the age of AI. How?

PAUSE + FOCUS: Ground yourself. Choose attention. Return when it drifts.
NOTICE: Metacognition catches assumptions; self-knowledge names what matters.
UPDATE: Learn, unlearn; revise when reality disagrees.
ACT: Try it without permission. Persist. See what happens.

Repeat. I think taste, judgment, and wisdom grow round after round.

Here's one way to use AI that doesn't make you dumber: Use it for set-up.

We've all stared down a project or task manager, or notes set up.
And spent way too much time building the thing rather than actually doing the work - thinking, researching, synthesizing.

I used Codex to set up my new knowledge system in Capacities and it set up a dashboard view with everything I need for a weekly review - while I was in a short meeting.

I made a custom app for my pet sitter.

My Type A, OCD fur-baby-mama tendencies spared the sitter my encyclopedic document and spreadsheets.

I used AI voice transcription (like Wispr Flow) to capture our system—behaviors, preferences, food, all of it. I fed that to Claude Code (Codex works too), and within an hour had a password-protected site that makes every detail easy for just us to find and use.

One big messy voice note became a custom website for my pet sitter. I walked around narrating the real routine, transcribed it, then used Claude Code to turn it into a password-protected, phone-friendly guide (after a couple rounds of edits). It’s organized by visit, cat, location, and quick help, so the sitter can find what matters mid-visit. The binder still exists. What ridiculously specific problem would you build a tiny app for? #ClaudeCode #PetSitting by @thinkwithv

The four things from OpenAI's Dev Day I'm paying attention to:

Personal agents called Dots (they join your Slack), Word and Excel inside ChatGPT, a plug-ins marketplace. Custom GPTs are reportedly going away by year-end, so if you built or sell one, watch this.
Nothing on trust and safety for agents acting on your behalf. Worth learning how the guardrails work.
