Title: ALL SCARS TELL A STORY.
(charcoal on paper, 11”x14”)

This is the most intimidating project I’ve attempted to date. Not only is it my first real self-portrait, but the nature of the subject is SO specific and so deeply personal…I hesitated for weeks before finally jumping in.

The photo reference for this piece was taken the day after I had my chemo port surgically removed. My hair was growing back, I no longer had a restricted diet, my immune system was restored…but I was still tired & dealing with lingering pain/side effects. For those that don’t know what a chemo port is, it’s a little device that is implanted beneath the skin with a catheter inserted into my neck in the subclavian vein. The port acts as a one-stop-shop for accessing bloodwork + administering iv fluids, chemo drugs, etc. This reduces the risks associated with getting poked in the veins over & over again. The implant looked like a little round alien beneath my skin & it’s still hard to believe it’s now gone. Nothing but some stitches & a scar left as evidence of what was once my everyday reality.

I’m still processing everything I went through with cancer treatments & contemplating my mortality through a new lens. Everyone’s cancer journey is unique & I don’t compare or judge how others view/live their experience. I can only speak to my own scars, my own story. My gaze in this piece is forward & direct because that’s the reality of how I got through the past 10 months—facing life head-on, one day/moment/minute at time. Nothing is guaranteed. The cancer could come back. So one day at a time is how I’ll continue to live life as fully as I can.💝 by @thinkyellow_art

Title: Insecurity.
(ceramic sculpture)

👉🏼Swipe to see what’s inside the puffy yellow man.

*Reminder that any piece of art can mean anything or nothing to you. When you look at him, what’s your initial reaction? Upon closer inspection, does your mind/feelings take you anywhere?

_____

🎶“…your old friend, Insecurity— the one companion that stuck by your side since you were born.”🎶
(Excerpt from “Soulmate” by No Use For A Name)

The snowsuit serves as a protective outer layer to keep us comfortable. It’s successful in providing a feeling of safety & warmth…assuming the environmental conditions match the need for such a suit. If it’s not cold enough to warrant it, what once provided comfort can quickly turn into discomfort. It can get hot in that suit. Our movements & reach are restricted. Our range of vision & sound is hindered. We cannot utilize our full sense of touch. Our shielded mouth & nose would soon feel stifled.

The suit has a zipper & can be taken on & off at any time. But the puffy yellow man doesn’t want to loosen it or take it off. What if a storm blows in? What if the cold comes back? What if he gets hypothermia or frostbite? He feels nervous, unsure, maybe even a little paranoid…so he chooses to stay in the suit…just in case.

Comfort zones are not a bad thing. Sometimes it can be productive to rest & catch your breath there. But what happens to us if we always give in to our insecurities & remain inside our comfort zones? If we let our insecurities dictate our thoughts, feelings, & actions, we end up living in a reactional state rather than a proactive one. We never end up working through our insecurities because we end up protecting them. If we always hide behind a front then we are not actively supporting our own growth…& as a result, we might just end up an underdeveloped, unrefined, isolated being. On the outside puffy yellow man seems vibrant & comfortable. But, on the inside, he is unsure of himself & everything around him. He remains lost within his own darkness. by @thinkyellow_art

Title: EXPAND. (Paper clay + mixed media, 45”x24”x19”)

You have permission to rest, to cocoon, to take a step back from the chaos of the world...

Pause.

Breathe.

Engage with the inner work.

Renewal and expansion comes only when we take time and create space for it.🦋

I never did get a good photo of this, so here’s a process video instead.🧡

@christensenpottery brought back a small ball of this yellow V1122 clay from @guldagergaard_claytopia and asked if anyone wanted to rehydrate it and play with it. I didn’t get a chance to try it when I was there so I happily took it. Finally threw with it today and 😍😍 I love the quality and feel! Excited to put it in the next soda firing and see what it does with the slips we have. And now I’m plotting a way to bring over a couple hundred pounds of this clay + the Audrey Blackman porcelain with molochite.😁🫱🏼‍🫲🏽

Same girl, same hot pink beanie— 📸 today vs. the end of Feb 2023, when I was just finishing radiation treatments after months of chemo. October is 🎀BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH🎀 and here’s a fun fact: the small lump found in my breast that ended up being cancerous did NOT follow the Googled list of symptoms. The lump (tumor) felt unfamiliar, but it was also very small, soft, and moveable. I didn’t have any other symptoms, such as changes in physical appearance, texture, pain, etc., so I wasn’t worried. It could’ve easily been just a harmless lil fatty lump. The only reason I got it checked out sooner than later is because Jer remained concerned about it and kept encouraging me for a couple of months to see my Obgyn. When my diagnosis came back as Stage 1 Grade 3 (which means aggressive and fast growing) Triple Negative Breast Cancer it was very clear how fortunate it was that this was caught early on, before it had spread. (Forever thank you @jerbear.451.❤️)

Of course, there are never any guarantees in life, but early detection does greatly increase treatment options and improves treatment outcomes and survival rates. So here’s my annual pinkalicious reminder to take care of those beautiful b🍒bies by doing regular self exams + annual checkups and screenings. Being familiar with your own breasts makes it much easier to detect abnormalities, should any arise. Make your health a priority because preventative action is the best medicine.🩷

Imma do it. (This one’s clay though, if you couldn’t tell.)
