yesteryear - caro claire burke book review

this is a book that i’ve been anticipating for almost a year. from the moment i read the premise, i knew that i had to pick it up. paired with the fact that i listen to diabolical lies every month, i was curious about what caro had to say on the topic.

we are introduced to natalie, our main character, in the middle of what seems to be a crossroads for her business. her producer was leaving the farm and hints of conflict were sprinkled throughout that interaction. we tread back to natalie’s college years, walked through how she set up her account, and her eventual stardom as an influencer.

where a lot of people criticized the book, i praised it. natalie was not anymore annoying than anyone i could’ve met in college. she’s a driven and smart young woman, perhaps thinks too highly of herself and too low of others. for a book like this, she was the perfect conduit to the story; interesting enough to keep you hooked, brazen enough to make you a bit heated, and yet insecure enough to make you feel safe as you listen to her story. her choices are completely in-line with her character which to me signifies that caro knows her. caro understands natalie.

the resolution i won’t talk about as that is a reading experience i want you to have for yourself. i will just say that it doesn’t fall flat. it perfectly captures what could happen to other women in similar situations. //slight spoiler– it’s believable. it’s within the realm of possibility. //end spoiler

did i learn anything new? yes, to have compassion. to know you can still love someone and hold them accountable. not that it’s a completely new concept, but to have compassion for strangers. especially those you really only see through a screen.

for women in translation month, i’m recommending some reads i’ve enjoyed throughout the years.

it’s all river - carla madeira (translated from portuguese)

the book follows a prostitute and her obsession with an unrequited love. this book is newly released and next up on my tbr.

the vegetarian - han kang (translated from korean)

one of my favorite reads in middle school. the vegetarian follows a korean women who grows an aversion towards meat. grotesque and violent– this story is a classic in feminist literature.

on the calculation of volume - solvej balle (translated from danish)

a bookseller experiences a time slip. i’ve posted this series multiple times on my page. truly a gem of a find this year.

the brothers lionheart - astrid lindgren (translated from swedish)

a classic children’s story. i read the original swedish copy in college and despite it’s framing as a fable, there is so much you can glean from it. acceptance, afterlife, grief, love– everything converges into one here.

the sea speaks his name - leila s. chudori (translated from indonesian)

inspired by true events; the story follows a student activist fighting the authoritarian regime in 90s indonesia. the book has been the basis of many discussions and debates in indonesia, but doesn’t require extensive knowledge of its politics to start with.

intimacies - katie kitamura, an english novel about a translator’s life in den haag

one of my favorites this year. do give it a read, it doesn’t take long.

there are a lot more translated books i’ve enjoyed. on principle, i’ve always appreciated reading far and wide, just so i can understand how people think and perceive the world from where they are standing. with this, i implore you to read more translated work. don’t limit yourself to just one region or country– explore the world!

have you read any of these books? which one was your favorite?

this is a reminder that reading is a lifelong journey. there are so many words to discover and meanings to uncover. you do not have to know everything, just come with an open mind.
